Matthew Modine Returns to the Screen for Monsterverse Sequel

One of the most prolific actors from the 1980’s, Matthew Modine, will be co-starring in the latest Godzilla x Kong picture which is due in March 2027.

Matthew Modine has been on a winning streak lately with a role in the latest Robert De Niro project, Zero Day, and before that, a supporting part in the critical box-office hit, Oppenheimer. In 2027, you’ll see Modine in an as of yet untitled Godzilla x Kong creature feature from Legendary Pictures. This film is set to be directed by Grant Sputore.

Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell and Delroy Lindo are already on board this new Monsterverse picture and Modine’s casting adds some terrific curiosity factor to the big-budget project. Modine certainly hasn’t been absent from the screen at all these days but this new part he is taking on sounds a bit more exciting than some of his other recent roles. For one, this movie will put Modine back in the spotlight that he enjoyed back in the mid-to-late 1980’s with roles in pictures like Vision Quest and Gross Anatomy. In Gross Anatomy, Modine had some powerful scenes opposite actress Christine Lahti who played a medical instructor with lupus. Vison Quest prominently featured the Madonna tune, “Crazy for You.”

It is interesting that Modine was one time pegged to be a big box-office draw when he was cast opposite Geena Davis in a 1990’s action/adventure picture titled Cutthroat Island. That film faltered financially, however, and plans to make Modine an action hero sort of fell by the wayside. Before that, he was a romantic leading man in comedic and dramatic films that tended to be moderately successful thanks to their modest budgets.

Modine made a hilarious movie in 1998 titled The Real Blonde for which I interviewed him during my late college years alongside Elizabeth Berkley, another star of the film, and Tom DiCillo, the director. That picture also featured the great Catherine Keener. I later met Modine that same year in a New York City movie theater (then called the Loews Village Seven) seeing Lethal Weapon 4 with his kid. I have always enjoyed his work, and he recently played a villain in an intriguing Liam Neeson action picture called Retribution. I thought that movie was pretty decent despite a few scathing reviews from other critics. Modine’s surprise role there certainly raised an eyebrow.

It’s never too late to become an action hero and one can hope that Modine’s career will take off yet again with his new role in the next Godzilla x Kong project. Oppenheimer definitely put him back in the public eye and his fans want to see him succeed in his latest big-budget endeavor.
