After $133M Box Office Run, Lionsgate Moves Forward With The Housemaid’s Secret
The Housemaid’s Secret Sequel in Development at Lionsgate, Production Targeted for 2026
Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to its recent box office hit The Housemaid, with production on The Housemaid’s Secret currently targeted to begin in 2026.
The follow-up comes on the heels of The Housemaid’s strong theatrical performance. The thriller has earned more than $75 million domestically in its first 17 days of release and has reached $133 million worldwide as international rollouts continue through January. The film’s commercial momentum, combined with sustained audience engagement across social media, has positioned the property as a viable franchise.
The Housemaid’s Secret is based on the second novel in author Freida McFadden’s best-selling trilogy. Development on the sequel has been underway for several months, with screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine set to return after adapting the first film. Producers Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, along with Paul Feig and Laura Fischer of Pretty Dangerous Pictures, are also expected to reprise their roles behind the scenes.
The sequel is being developed with the intent for Feig to return to direct. Stars Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone are likewise being eyed to return, with Sweeney again serving as an executive producer alongside Carly Elter and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures. McFadden will also executive produce the project.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said the decision to move forward reflects both the film’s box office success and audience enthusiasm. He noted that the studio believed in McFadden’s stories from the outset and sees the sequel as an opportunity to continue Millie’s story in collaboration with the returning creative team.
Producer Todd Lieberman echoed that sentiment, citing the film’s reception and the strong connection audiences have formed with the characters and narrative. Feig added that adapting the next chapter was a natural progression, given that McFadden had already extended the story on the page.
McFadden’s Housemaid book series has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide across all titles. The Housemaid’s Secret accounts for approximately four million of those sales. The novel has been translated into 40 languages, has spent more than 65 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and won the 2023 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Thriller.
The sequel will once again be overseen at Lionsgate by Chelsea Kujawa, who shepherded the first film into the studio, alongside Maria Ascanio. Robert Melnik negotiated the deals for the studio.
Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid stars Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins. The film follows Millie, a young woman attempting to escape her past by accepting a live-in housemaid position for a wealthy couple, only to find herself drawn into a dangerous web of secrets, manipulation, and power. What begins as an apparent fresh start quickly spirals into a seductive and perilous psychological game, where appearances prove deceptive and nothing is as it seems.
The Housemaid is a Hidden Pictures and Pretty Dangerous Pictures production presented by Lionsgate.
