AMY (2015): Winehouse Family Claim Documentary is Misleading

Amy Winehouse

Winehouse Family Oppose Documentary. Amy Winehouse’s family is speaking out about an upcoming documentary based on the life of the late singer. Winehouse’s family is claiming that the upcoming film Amy (set to premiere next month at the Cannes Film Festival), presents a “misleading” and “unbalanced” account of the singer’s life.

The family spokesperson released a statement to PEOPLE saying,

It is both misleading and contains some basic untruths.

The narrative is formed by the testimony of a narrow sample of Amy’s associates, many of whom had nothing to do with her in the last years of her life. Counter views expressed to the filmmakers did not make the final cut.

The family has taken grave exception to director Asif Kapadia’s claims that the Winehouse family did not support Winehouse when she needed them most.  Despite initially supporting the production of the film, the Winehouse family have spoken out about about the film on more than one occasion. In an earlier interview with The Sun on Sunday, Winehouse’s father, Mitch was quoted as saying,

I felt sick when I watched it for the first time. Amy would be furious. This is not what she would have wanted.

A spokesperson for the film responded to PEOPLE with the statement,

We came on board with the full backing of the Winehouse family and we approached the project with total objectivity. We conducted in the region of 100 interviews with people that knew Amy. The story that the film tells is a reflection of our findings from these interviews.

It is unlikely that we we will ever get to the bottom of the “he said, she said” dispute between the filmmakers and the Winehouse family. Documentaries have been known to cut hundreds of hours of footage down into two minute clips in order to portray people in the worst (and most marketable) light. People have also been known to discredit film’s that shine a spotlight on what kind of flaming pile of human garbage they are behind closed doors. The truth about the film Amy likely remains somewhere in the middle.
