And the Envelope Please…Who Will Take Home an Academy Award for 2022 Films This Coming Sunday?

Brendan Gleeson Colin Farrell The Banshees Of Inisherin

Predictions for the 95th Academy Awards

Several performers from notable 2022 movie titles will be taking home Oscars this Sunday night, March 12th, and winners could include the likes of Brendan Fraser and Cate Blanchett.

This year, much more than others, is hard to predict in terms of selecting who, exactly, will take home Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting from the Dolby Theatre and hopefully nobody will get slapped this year. Some films, however, could get slapped with snubs from Oscar in the major categories, including movies like Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Entering into this Oscar race back in the summer and fall of last year were three high profile contenders for Best Actor and all three have equal chances at taking home the gold in this respective category. Colin Farrell and his eyebrows made The Banshees of Inisherin the gem that it was while Austin Butler was absolutely spectacular playing Elvis Presley in Elvis. The theme of this year’s Oscar ceremony will, in my opinion, be “Making a comeback” and Brendan Fraser fits the bill to take home Best Actor for his work in The Whale which is his best performance to date and a role for the record books. Fraser won SAG and the Critics Choice award so is poised to take home the Best Actor trophy for his knockout performance.

For Best Actress, Michelle Yeoh was the early favorite for Everything Everywhere All at Once but her performance was overshadowed by Cate Blanchett’s in Tár. When I saw Tár, I felt Blanchett was unbeatable and I will be sticking to my guns by believing she will still win the Oscar. She blew all the other competitors away in many respects except for Ana de Armas who certainly won’t win for the controversial Blonde. Blanchett is one of the most honored performers of our time and will most likely take home another statue on Sunday. And, rightfully so.

In the supporting categories, Ke Huy Quan is the hands-down favorite to win (and deservedly so) Best Supporting Actor for his remarkable work in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan is fitting with the theme of “comeback” that the Oscars seem to be taking on this year. Quan was once a kid actor and embodied goodness in his new part. Quan turned in a wonderful, gentle (if sometimes a bit wild, too) performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once which will most likely win Best Picture. Best Supporting Actress is a three-way race between Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once). I’m casting my voite on Kerry Condon because the winner at SAG was Curtis, the Critics Choice and Golden Globes winner was Bassett and those two don’t seem likely to take home the gold when comparing their work to the brilliant Condon’s turn in The Banshees of Inisherin. If Condon loses, it will probably be Bassett. Curtis may have people remembering the sour taste Halloween Ends left behind and Curtis should end up losing but hey…you never know.

The Best Director should match with Best Picture this year which means Everything Everywhere All at Once and its filmmakers, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert should take home the gold for Best Director. If there’s an upset for Best Director, it will be Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans but the odds are low on an upset happening in that particular category.

If Condon loses (and even if she wins), The Banshees of Inisherin will most likely get its big reward in the Best Original Screenplay category whereas Women Talking stands a real shot at taking home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. It’s still anybody’s guess as this race is the most difficult to predict in years. Who do you think will take home the gold this coming Sunday night?
