Everything Everywhere All at Once On the Road to Oscar Glory

Everything Everywhere All at Once has just received 5 Screen Actors Guild nominations and a Directors Guild of America nod for its filmmakers.

A24’s ambitious masterpiece, Everything Everywhere All at Once is shaping up to be one of the year’s most honored films scoring 5 Screen Actors Guild nods and a Directors Guild of America nomination in addition to winning Golden Globes last night for two of the movie’s stars, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. This film will certainly be moving on to the Oscars with these nods and honors under its belt.

The Screen Actors Guild honored the primary cast of the movie which is directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. SAG gave the key players of the picture “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” and SAG also singled out Michelle Yeoh for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, Key Huy Quan for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role and two of the picture’s co-stars, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. Yeoh actually beat out Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) for a Female Actor in a Leading Role nod which makes Yeoh’s inclusion in the category all the more extraordinary as an accomplishment.

The Directors Guild of America named Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert as Best Director nominees for the coveted directing prize. While it would be a long shot for the “Daniels” to beat out Steven Spielberg who is nominated by the DGA for The Fabelmans (Spielberg also won the Golden Globe for Best Director last night). the honor is quite a prestigious one making Everything Everywhere All at Once a film that is being highly acclaimed with great justification. Baz Luhrmann was expected to get a nod for Elvis but was snubbed showing just how competitive it was this year. Also noteworthy is the fact that female directors such as Sarah Polley (Women Talking) and Maria Schrader (She Said) found themselves sadly sitting out on the sidelines this year for their great work.

Everything Everywhere All at Once received almost unanimous critical acclaim. Ke Huy Quan was once a child actor who starred in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies and has now re-emerged in Hollywood as a performer to contend with. He will almost certainly take home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his turn in A24’s much loved recent gem. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, watch it to see what Quan’s character in the picture does with a fanny pack. It’s a masterful scene in a picture full of humor and heart which makes all the film’s praise well-deserved.
