ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET. (2023): Acclaimed Comedy Released This Past Spring Tries to Laugh its Way to the Oscars

Dramedy From Last Spring Enters Awards Race as a Comedy

Last spring, critics were kind to Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. and, now, the film has positioned itself for consideration in the comedy categories at the Golden Globes to try to get the awards many feel it deserves.

FilmBook reviewed Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. last spring and had some nice things to say about its stars, Abby Ryder Fortson and Kathy Bates. Now, it seems that due to some critical raves outside of our own recommendation of the film, the movie has been positioned as a significant awards contender while the likes of one its stars, Rachel McAdams, now seems a possibility for a potential Best Supporting Actress Oscar nod.

This delightful comedy is going into the Golden Globes as a comedy where it will still face stiff competition but, also, feel at home as one of the better films of that genre which was released this past year. There will be six films in the Best Musical/Comedy category at the Globes and although Poor Things and Barbie will probably scare “Margaret” off from a win, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. could ultimately make the list of the six best comedies of the year which are to be selected by the Globes.

Kelly Fremon Craig directed the acclaimed Abby Ryder Fortson comedy and if the film’s young leading lady, Fortson, gets into the Best Actress comedy race at the Globes, the sky could be the limit in regard to the star’s future. Fortson could find her way and end up with an Oscar nomination which would make her a dark horse candidate for Best Actress in an already overstuffed field of deserving candidates.

Don’t count Oscar winner, Kathy Bates, out of the running for her delightful turn as the grandmother in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Bates is due for another nod and this role could put her back in the running for awards even though the better-reviewed McAdams stands a stronger shot at Oscar nomination glory thanks to the terrific reviews she received from several critics.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. was released by Lionsgate and is currently one of the best reviewed films of the year, and the single best reviewed wide-release of the year with a 99% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes. While at this point, the movie feels like a long shot to get major Academy Award nominations, the push in the Golden Globes to get it into categories as a comedy could make the movie become fresh in Oscar voters’ heads which would thus officially get it into the race if enough people support it.

Abby Ryder Fortson would be the perfect candidate (and something of a shoo-in) for a Best Actress Oscar nomination almost any other year but with strong turns this year by Emma Stone, Cailee Spaeny and Greta Lee for Poor Things, Priscilla and Past Lives, Fortson would be the candidate who would have the hardest time getting in unless the movie really gets the support it needs during the campaigning period.

Fortson interviewed with Maria Menounos for a “Noovie” segment recently and answered some questions about movies’ settings in which Fortson scored perfect results. Fortson proved she has the charisma to become a movie star with her 2023 film, but can she back up that talent with an Oscar nod? We shall see.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. scored a straight “A” CinemaScore grade when it was released. Though it only made $20 million domestically, it has received glowing reviews which suggest it could ride its success even further than the Golden Globes and find its way into some major Oscar categories next year.
