BATMAN: KNIGHTFALL PART 1: KNIGHTFALL (2026): First Part of New BATMAN Animated Trilogy Set to Be Unveiled in June

Upcoming Animated Batman Film to Have June Festival Premiere

The first part of a proposed animated trilogy, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, will have its debut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June.

While we wait for Matt Reeves’ big screen follow-up to 2022’s The Batman, the Caped Crusader will be fighting Bane this summer in an animated picture that is the first of a trilogy called Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall. Bane will break Batman’s back in this project to be directed by Jeff Wamester. In this first animated chapter in the series, Bane will free the Rogues Gallery from Arkham Asylum, according to IMDb’s plot synopsis.

The Batman: Part II is currently slated for an October 2027 fall theatrical release, but this animated film trilogy will likely be made available shortly after after its Annecy International Animation Film Festival France premiere, most likely for home entertainment viewers. The two movies that will come after Knightfall will be subtitled as follows: Knightquest, and KnightsEnd.

Christopher Nolan was said to have borrowed segments from the Knightfall comics for his 2012 gem, The Dark Knight Rises. That picture showcased Bane (played by Tom Hardy) as its villain and was wildly successful at the box-office. Bane may beat up Batman a little more in the animated movies coming out that will kick off with Knightfall at the festival in June. This first chapter in the animated trilogy is slated to run a lean 78-minutes in length and it is yet undetermined whether it will start out on HBO Max or be a paid streaming event to start.

The Annecy festival has, over the years, premiered the likes of Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, and the recently Oscar-nominated animated gem, Arco. Annecy is a top-flight festival to start-up movies which will thrive in the competitive world of animated pictures. This first Batman chapter in the proposed trilogy is said to potentially break new barriers with exciting animation that will likely remain faithful to the comics on which it was based.

Batman: Hush is an example of a recent animated Batman picture that was not released theatrically. It ran 82-minutes. In 1993, there was a theatrical release of an animated 76-minutes long Batman film, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It only collected $5 million domestically and sealed the fate (at least for the time being) for animated Batman movies in the series in terms of them being released theatrically. All eyes are on the quality of 2027’s Matt Reeves sequel, but take a look at the first part of this animated trilogy when it releases later this year after its June premiere at the Annecy festival.
