Beetlejuice 2 Could (Finally) Become a Reality

A sequel to the 1988 hit Beetlejuice may actually get the green light from Warner Bros. which would expedite the long-awaited production.

“Shake, Shake Senora” because –“Day-O!”–Beetlejuice 2 may finally make it to the screen! Michael Keaton may even reprise his role alongside “Stranger Things” star, Winona Ryder, who won the hearts of America as Lydia in the original Tim Burton film, Beetlejuice. Well the movie was kind of odd and was an acquired taste earning just a “B” CinemaScore grade but, regardless, the movie has become a fan favorite over the years and has built an audience much larger than its $74 million domestic box-office take implies. This movie became a phenomenon that even inspired a Broadway musical of the same name. Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment has propelled the upcoming sequel into motion.

If all goes smoothly, the sequel to one of the most beloved Tim Burton films may become a reality. It could thus see a 2023 unveiling. Michael Keaton has come a long way since the original Beetlejuice with his work in movies such as Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and Spotlight. In fact, Keaton won an Oscar nomination for Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Keaton also, just two nights ago, nabbed a SAG award for his performance on the dramatic miniseries, “Dopesick.” He will be back in the public eye again with turns in The Flash and Batgirl as none other than Batman (again)! Winona Ryder’s career has had more ups and downs than a roller coaster from Reality Bites to becoming a known kleptomaniac to Mr. Deeds. She’s found long term success on “Stranger Things.” Both stars are expected to come back for Beetlejuice 2 though no news is available as to whether or not director Tim Burton will hop on board.

Burton had been considering a sequel to his 1988 gem for many years. Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian was once proposed but never saw the light of day. Also, a more recent sequel conceived in 2011 had been considered but, that idea too, was shelved indefinitely. Many Beetlejuice fans are excited at the prospect that, thanks to Brad Pitt, this movie could truly happen! The story line of the original film centered on a bio-exorcist called Betelgeuse who was played by Keaton. Betelgeuse was employed to scare away the new people who come to live in a house occupied by the ghosts of a couple who died unexpectedly.

Some of the key favorite scenes fans love from Beetlejuice include when Winona Ryder danced to Harry Belafonte’s “Shake Shake, Senora” and another where a table full of characters end up dancing to Belafonte’s “Banana Boat Song (Day-O!)” when they become unexpectedly possessed. There’s no doubt that if the sequel gets green-lit that people will “jump in the line” and shake their bodies over to the movie theater to go see Beetlejuice 2!
