Beyonce’s Visual Album ‘Black Is King’ to Debut on Disney+

Beyonce announced on Saturday a new visual album ‘Black Is King’, which was inspired by The Lion King, will debut on Disney+.

Beyonce dropped a tease trailer on her website on Saturday night announcing the release of the film. This visual album will feature artists such as Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, 070 Shake, Tierra Whack, Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter and Jessie Reyez, as well as African artists including Wizkid, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Yemi Alade, Busiswa and Salatiel.

The film was written, directed, and executive produced by Beyonce, who voiced Nala in the remake of ‘The Lion King’. It’s meant to celebrate Black resilience and culture, honoring the voyages of Black families throughout time, and tells the story of a young king’s journey through betrayal, love, and self-identity. In a statement from Disney and from Beyonce’s company, Parkwood Entertainment, they stated that “the visual album from Beyoncé reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.”

The film will release on Disney+ on July 31, 2020, which is the one year anniversary of the theatrical release of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ CGI remake.
