BONEYARD: New Mel Gibson True Crime Picture Goes to the Cannes Market

Mel Gibson Father Stu

Mel Gibson Thriller Hits the Cannes Market

The latest Mel Gibson true crime thriller, Boneyard, has begun its sales launch in Cannes through the studio Lionsgate.

Mel Gibson is back. After at least three high-profile movies last year, the actor is teaming up with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson for the true story, Boneyard. This film is currently in the works with production happening now. While it’s based on the true story of the “Bone Collector,” It should be much different than the similarly named film from 1999 which starred Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie.

Gibson recently struck out with the very forgettable Last Looks, but hit it big with a terrific supporting turn in the moderately successful Mark Wahlberg film, Father Stu. In Boneyard, Gibson will play the role of an FBI agent who signs up to figure out who the “boneyard” killer is. Jackson will portray the police chief who finds over 11 women’s remains which propels the investigation into action. It sounds like a dream pairing of two completely different types of actors with Gibson and Jackson in Boneyard. The scary part of this new film is that the killer that is sought out in the picture may still be at large today.

Asif Akbar will be directing the new serial killer thriller and will be co-writing it. Many fans of the 1999 film, The Bone Collector, may be searching for parallels between the two pictures but they are a bit different in style and completely unique in their respective story lines. The 1999 film was based on a book.

Although Gibson had been toying around with making another Lethal Weapon movie, it’s yet to come into fruition as of yet. It has been confirmed that the movie is definitely not off the table but just hasn’t gotten into the filming stages quite yet. Gibson’s other high-profile project from last year was On the Line which crashed and burned from a critical standpoint. That film had a great concept but fell apart at the end due to an unforgivably awful twist ending that pulled the rug from everything we had witnessed prior to it.

Jackson is known for being both a rapper and an actor and will be appearing in the latest The Expendables movie which is due out soon. He and Gibson should make for a law enforcement dream team in Boneyard.

While Boneyard makes its appearance on the Cannes market, you may want to check out some recent Gibson movies to see for yourself that the actor still has the potential to make a truly great picture. His performance in Father Stu was first-rate and some of his work in the forgettable On the Line was very forceful and evidence that the actor can still potentially carry a movie with a good script.
