POWER BALLAD (2026): John Carney’s SXSW Favorite with Paul Rudd Scheduled to Go Wide on June 5th
Paul Rudd’s Latest Slated to Open June 5th
Paul Rudd‘s latest movie, Power Ballad, promises a thought-provoking and moving experience and the film is slated to go wide on June 5th after a week-long run at the specialty box-office.
On the front of prints of the new Michael Jackson movie, Michael, is the trailer for the John Carney-helmed comedy/drama, Power Ballad. This is director John Carney (Once, Begin Again)’s latest music-themed movie. It looks absolutely great and stars Paul Rudd (Clueless) and Nick Jonas.
Power Ballad is the deeply moving story of a man (Rudd) whose popularity is fading as he plays songs at weddings to make ends meet. When he shares a song of his with Jonas’s character, the tune reaches some amazing heights of popularity. One problem, though: Jonas’s character is getting credit for Rudd’s character’s work! It’s a classic tale of haves and have nots and how people come to be successful in a competitive world. Power Ballad scored excellent reviews and was a crowd-pleaser at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival.
Carney has delivered time and time again with the quality films he has directed. Once came on to the scene in 2007 and proved all bets were off as to just how great it would be. This 2007 masterpiece even scored a Best Original Song Oscar for “Falling Slowly.” In 2013, Begin Again opened in theaters with Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley featured in another lovely music-themed movie. It was an instant gem that audiences fell in love with, at the specialty box-office, in particular.
Paul Rudd has been something of a fading star at the box-office with the mediocre returns of the new Anaconda movie proving he is struggling to maintain the mainstream box-office clout he once had with the Ghostbusters pictures. Though he has found tremendous critical success in films on the art-house circuit, art is imitating life as Rudd’s character in Power Ballad seems to echo the film career of Rudd’s in terms of some of his big films’ fading financial success. This is Rudd’s comeback movie, though, and is expected to not only earn excellent box-office returns but re-establish Rudd as a stellar leading man who is unafraid to take risks with the daring projects that the actor chooses to work on.
Power Ballad is the type of movie that could play all summer long! It should have exceptional music per the typical John Carney movie. Rudd’s heartfelt work in the picture could even ride him all the way to the Golden Globes or Oscars with a nomination for his acting. This film will open wide on June 5th with a preliminary limited theatrical engagement the week before. With trailers playing in front of Michael, the sky is the limit for Rudd and his truly moving new film.
