The Strangers: Chapter 2 Set for a September Theatrical Release

The follow-up to 2024’s moderate box-office hit, The Strangers: Chapter 1, will be released on September 26, 2025 in lieu of Saw XI which has been yanked from the theatrical release calendar.

Madelaine Petsch of “Riverdale” fame will be back on the big screen this September in the sequel to 2024’s horror movie success, The Strangers: Chapter 1. Despite that film’s low 21% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating, director Renny Harlin has made the follow-up picture an event movie for horror fans which, according to IMDb, is going to be over two hours long! That statistic may soon change, though, as it seems a little too long for a movie like this one which could have a threadbare plot. Though the first entry in the series needed a shot of plot, the sequel could be more appealing than the original and scarier too depending on what agenda the filmmakers are following.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 was actually a reboot of the terrifying 2008 film, The Strangers, which starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. Though it was better reviewed than Harlin’s first working of the material, the original 2008 picture, itself, currently has less than a 50% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 replaces Saw XI which was the original film on the studio, Lionsgate’s theatrical release calendar for the date of September 26, 2025. While this new Harlin sequel probably won’t earn the same quality reviews that Saw XI may have obtained, “stranger” things have happened than a sequel actually improving upon an original, especially considering the possibility that the new Strangers movie seems almost double the length of the first reboot, according to IMDb.

Madelaine Petsch has not been proven, thus far, to be a truly bankable actress, nor has her co-star, Gabriel Basso, but the fact that The Strangers: Chapter 2 is positioned as a theatrical release does, indeed, show hope that the studio is expecting a small level box-office hit with this cross between a sequel and a reboot, a “requel,” if you will.

This new spot on the theatrical calendar for the latest The Strangers film could help audiences forget they didn’t care much for 2024’s edition in the series …Chapter 1. That recent horror movie received a mere “C” CinemaScore grade. That means some people most likely aren’t planning to come back for Chapter 2 despite the minor talent featured in it. Those creepy masks that the killers wear in these The Strangers movies may help this upcoming sequel extend its run into October when people start to seek out scary movies of note.
