Madelaine Petsch The Strangers Chapter

The Strangers: Chapter 2 Review

The Strangers: Chapter 2 (2025) Film Review, a movie directed by Renny Harlin, written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland and starring Madelaine Petsch, Ema Horvath, Matus Lajcak, Brooke Lena Johnson, JR Esposito, Richard Brake, Pedro Leandro, Janis Ahern, Ben Cartwright, Sara Freedland, Stevee Davies, Ella Bruccoleri, Nola Wallace, Pippa Blaylock, Jake Cogman, Froy Gutierrez and Rachel Shenton.

Renny Harlin’s second installment of his The Strangers trilogy could be the best one yet. The Strangers: Chapter 2 is everything you’ve come to expect from a story of masked crazies on the hunt for an innocent victim. Madelaine Petsch is that innocuous character, Maya, who has lost her boyfriend to the psychopaths at large. The reason the new Harlin sequel works is because it digs deep inside the minds of the killers and traces their lives back to when they became evil. Without giving too much away, the masked killers (Dollface, Scarecrow, etc.) started their wicked shenanigans early on as kids and that gives the movie a high level of creepiness factor that is perfect for this type of horror picture.

Most of the movie has Maya running around the town she finds herself trapped in. She starts out in the hospital (shades of Halloween II) and ends up escaping. She doesn’t know who to trust. Everybody in the town seems suspicious so when some town folks ask her to ride along in their truck, Maya doesn’t really know what the right decision is – go with them or not? Most of the film is set at night and the movie has the feel of a nightmare that keeps on going as the masked killers pursue Maya with a vengeance.

Dollface is the most memorable of the killers in the film. The mask almost looks like Betty Boop, but she’s quite a deranged individual as you may have gathered by now. Though the first Harlin The Strangers film was decent, this movie ups the ante quite a bit. There are more shocks in this new installment than ever. When a wild boar comes into the picture, it’s another foe for Maya to face and the scene with the boar attacking her is one of the better ones in the movie thanks to the tension that Harlin builds in this part of the movie.

Of course, you have your sheriffs, your deputies, your doctors, your diner workers and your nurses, but the movie works so well as a horror picture because none of them are easy to trust. Maya feels like the only normal one in the town and the audience will root for her. At the film’s conclusion, there are images on display of what is to come in the third movie and it’s possible that Harlin has saved the best for last.

Petsch is the perfect horror movie scream queen, but she never becomes overbearing or annoying like the heroines in so many horror films of the past do. Maya is stuck in a town where everything surrounding her feels like she is trapped in a nightmare. Because of the movie’s effective set pieces and use of masks, almost every scene becomes a chance for “the Strangers” to make their move and kill Maya. She’s too smart for them, though. She thinks on her feet and uses her wits to survive. While we don’t know what Chapter 3 will offer viewers quite yet, one can only root for Maya to get back to her normal life. Even though she’s lost the love of her life, she needs to have some peace after the events of these films.

When the movie shows the flashbacks of the killers as kids, that’s when it really gets under your skin. One of the boys in the town had a crush on a blonde girl, but a little brunette took matters into her own hands and the results will frighten the viewer. This movie probably has more backstory to it that will be revealed in the third and (probably final) installment.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 has minor flaws, but they don’t take away from the suspense factor of the film’s frightening sequences. People will complain that it’s too violent and over-the-top, but Harlin has never been a director to let up on keeping the momentum going in his movies. He directed the great action picture, The Long Kiss Goodnight almost 30 years ago. He’s also known for his Sylvester Stallone movie, Cliffhanger. This new horror movie could find an audience on streaming and set the stage for Chapter 3 which will hopefully be released in theaters.

Since The Strangers: Chapter 2 features scary characters audiences have seen before, it needed to take things up a notch with the story line and this film certainly did. Meanwhile, the supporting performers do a solid job managing to keep viewers guessing if their characters are good or bad. This is the kind of movie that’s perfect for a late night viewing on Friday or Saturday. It will keep audiences entertained and on the edge of their seats throughout.

Rating: 7/10
