DONKEY (2028): New SHREK Spin-off Movie Solidifies Release Date for 2028

Donkey Secures June 2028 Release Date

The new Shrek spin-off movie, Donkey, featuring Eddie Murphy as the voice of the title character, will be released on June 30, 2028.

Shrek 5 is going to be released next year and it comes out June 30, 2027. Exactly, one year later, the animated spin-off movie, Donkey, has just set its official release date. Eddie Murphy will once again voice the beloved Donkey character in a story separate from those found in the Shrek franchise. This new film is said to be somewhat focused on Donkey’s half-dragon and half-donkey kids and Donkey’s relationship with his dragon wife.

Charlie Bean is slated to direct Donkey. Bean previously helmed movies like the fairly recent Disney Plus remake of Lady and the Tramp. Universal Pictures will be releasing DreamWorks Animation’s Donkey on the aforementioned date at the beginning of the summer of 2028.

It has been a while since Shrek Forever After faltered with critics in 2010 securing a mere 58% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That film’s box-office was solid with a gross of $752 million worldwide even if the domestic total was underwhelming, coming in at just $238 million.

Shrek 5 promises to be a big hit from a financial perspective as people have surely missed the characters of Shrek (MIke Myers) and his friend, Donkey. Consider Shrek 5 something of a reboot, or, rather, a “requel,” that will serve as both a new sequel and a reboot of what was once an unstoppable cash cow franchise.

The upcoming standalone Donkey movie will most likely be quite humorous for fans of the goofball character, Donkey. Expect Donkey to also be a key character in Shrek 5 in order to whet the appetite for more of the character voiced by Eddie Murphy in the upcoming spin-off movie due in 2028. It remains unseen whether Mike Myers, Shrek, himself, will factor into the new Donkey movie and it is not yet clear where the upcoming Donkey movie will fit in on the “Shrek Universe” timeline.

Shrek movies have always showcased the hilarious talents of Murphy and a Donkey movie was a long-time in the making. Murphy often spoke about the possibility of this spin-off movie actually coming into fruition at another outlet. Now, it looks like it will finally get off the ground.

Shrek and Donkey have always felt like iconic animated characters. There will be a new surge in Shrek stuffed dolls and regular movie-based toys next year which will be easy to cherish in a world where no other Shrek feature film has been released in 17 years. This new Shrek movie opening next year will determine just how much marketing muscle should be placed on Shrek movies and their spin-off films.
