STRAYS (2023): Raunchy Talking Dog Comedy Pushed Back From June to August

Dog Strays

Strays Re-Scheduled for a Late Summer Release

The wild talking dog comedy, Strays, has shifted its release date from early June to mid August amidst the ongoing writers’ strike.

It was originally slated to open in June but, now, the Will Ferrell/Jamie Foxx raunchy talking dog movie, Strays, is going to be released on August 18th. The reason behind the delay is mostly the writers’ strike which would make it difficult for the hugely popular stars, Ferrell and (potentially) Foxx, to appear on late night television to promote the picture. This film is an “R-rated” comedy and its theatrical success is dependent on young adults showing up to theaters to see it.

Strays is also noteworthy due to the popularity of its director, Josh Greenbaum who made the absolutely hysterical 2021 movie, Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar. That movie was noteworthy for its surprisingly good reviews and offered audiences a great time. The upcoming comedy, Strays, promises to be a “doggone” good time and also stars Isla Fisher as one of the characters in the movie. It would be great to see Greenbaum on television promoting the new movie after the terrific success of 2021’s aforementioned female-led gem.

Similar August released raunchy comedies from Universal like The 40-Year Old Virgin and Good Boys were wildly successful at the box-office and the studio hopes that Strays would follow in those films’ footsteps. Although Strays will now face Blue Beetle at the box-office, many insiders think that Strays will be good counter-programming for the likely hit, Blue Beetle from DC. Both of these pictures will most likely appeal to different audience demographics.

Ferrell and Foxx are doing voice-overs for a couple of animal characters in the new movie. This film revolves around a dog whose owner does him wrong and the dog joins forces with a bunch of other stray dogs to seek revenge against his owner.

Recently, Ferrell did a great job in Spirited, the holiday-themed movie from last year. Jamie Foxx has suffered health problems these days and it would be nice for the actor to have a hit movie with Strays amidst all his recent real-life difficulties.

Strays will most likely earn at least $40 million domestically on its new date. Its success entirely depends on how well audiences receive the concept of foul-mouthed talking dogs. It would also help if the movie’s stars, particularly Will Ferrell and Isla Fisher, could make the late night talk show rounds and promote the picture. In the meantime, the latest Transformers movie will have more opportunity to rake in cash during the month of June since Strays has vacated its original release date. Please Don’t Destroy was originally slated to open August 18th but is now going to premiere on Peacock.
