The Super Mario Bros. Movie Releasing Two Days Early

Universal/Illumination’s tentpole animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is getting a jump start on Easter by two additional days than was expected.

Easter is usually a big time of the year for families to go to the movies together. Universal and Illumination have positioned their animated movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as the must-see family film event of the season. The studios believe so much in this film that the animated picture will be released two days early. On April 5th, you’ll be able to get to see the Nintendo game-based movie which is the talk of Hollywood right now as it is expected to drive tickets sales significantly at movie theaters across the world. The early release will help stir up some positive word of mouth that should help the movie play extremely well throughout spring break.

Super Mario Bros. was once a live-action 1993 movie which bombed big-time at the box-office with just a “B+” CinemaScore grade and a paltry $20 million domestic box-office take. After the success of the video game-based Sonic the Hedgehog movies (which featured Sonic similar to the way he was presented in the games), it seems likely that getting the “Mario Bros.” truer to their original styles is the way to go. With video game movies doing better than ever it seems that the upcoming animated picture is something that has “box-office smash” written all over it.

Voice-over talent for the new animated movie cannot be of a higher caliber. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Day, Seth Rogen and Jack Black will be voicing the characters of the hugely popular video game who will be showcased in the new film. Many people are excited at the prospect of hearing the multi-talented Taylor-Joy as the Princess–Princess Peach and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. While Pratt playing as Mario’s voice has some detractors, most industry insiders don’t expect that fact to hurt the animated picture from a financial standpoint.

Illumination movies have been doing great at the box-office lately from Sing 2 to Minions: The Rise of Gru. With those films as references, the just over 90-minutes long The Super Mario Bros. Movie could be looking at a box-office gross somewhere in-between the two aforementioned Illumination titles. The brief running time will keep showtimes plentiful for the upcoming animated picture. While it won’t match the latest Minions movie which had a summer release date on its side, Mario will likely best Sing 2. $260 million looks like a comfortable number to predict for the new Mario movie to achieve as long as it gets decent critical scores and audience approval.
