CUT OFF: Warner Bros. Pulls the Plug on July Release Date for New Jonah Hill/Kristen Wiig Comedy
Warner Bros. Yanks Cut Off from July Schedule
Warner Bros. has taken the new Jonah Hill/Kristen Wiig comedy, Cut Off, away from its originally proposed July 17, 2026 release date.
Jonah Hill may have a lot of faith in the new comedy movie he’s starring in and directing, Cut Off, but the film’s studio, Warner Bros., doesn’t necessarily seem too confident that the new film has what it takes to succeed at the box-office on its originally planned release date where it would go head-to-head with The Odyssey. That’s one way to look at the situation. There are virtually a million other hypothetical reasons that this new Hill movie isn’t coming out when it was supposed to. However, it seems this decision suggests that the actual quality of the movie may be at least a minor issue. Cut Off features Hill and Kristen Wiig as a pair of siblings who are “cut off” from their wealthy parents, played by Bette Midler and Nathan Lane.
Hill once compared the project to films such as Trading Places, Clueless and Step Brothers, but it could be something more similar to the 1990 box-office bomb, Where the Heart Is. Never heard of that one? Don’t worry, nobody really heard of it because it was barely released. It featured the story of a wealthy dad (Dabney Coleman) kicking his kids out and making them fend for themselves. That film barely scraped up $1 million at the domestic box-office. The difference with Cut Off is that the “kids” in question are middle-aged and should already be fending for themselves, making the movie’s proposed story line a potential tough sell.
The brightest side of the situation could be that the movie isn’t bad and that it’s just not ready for release yet. It’s doubtful that it is Oscar-caliber, but maybe the film would fare better outside the dog-eat-dog summer movie season. This film is not currently on the list of films being released in 2026 by the studio, though, so maybe it will get dumped onto the January 2027 release calendar.
If Cut Off kept its original release date, it would get some overflow from people who get sold out of Christopher Nolan’s tentpole blockbuster, The Odyssey. It’s not clear, exactly, why Cut Off has been delayed but the news of its delay is disappointing for Wiig fans who were pretty happy with her recent work in Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie.
Nathan Lane and Bette Midler worked together before in the forgotten movie, Isn’t She Great. That movie barely cracked $3 million in worldwide box-office grosses and earned a mediocre “B-” CinemaScore grade. Lets hope the financial prospects and audience marks for Cut Off are much better when the film gets an actual release date.
