Jesse Eisenberg Set to Direct a Musical Comedy
Jesse Eisenberg is slated to direct a new musical comedy film which will reteam him with actress Julianne Moore.
Jesse Eisenberg has recently received Oscar buzz for his new film, A Real Pain, which is poised to secure a best screenplay nomination. Eisenberg’s sophomore outing as a director has been extremely well reviewed and now, the actor/director will be helming a whole different type of movie about a shy woman who gets a part in a local musical and becomes immersed in the world of theater. Julianne Moore is set to star alongside Paul Giamatti of Sideways fame.
This new musical will be co-produced by Emma Stone’s company, Fruit Tree, which makes the picture a definite high-profile production which will put Eisenberg in the running for even more acclaim as a filmmaker than he’s received for his gem, A Real Pain.
Eisenberg’s first rodeo as a director was 2022’s When You Finish Saving the World where Julianne Moore played a principal role. Moore was called out by FilmBook for her terrific turn in the film which went unnoticed by the Academy Awards due to a low-profile release for the picture. Could Moore recapture her Oscar glory this time around and finally receive a nomination under Eisenberg’s capable direction? The answer is a resounding, “yes.” However, Moore is currently a candidate for a potential nod for the upcoming masterpiece, The Room Next Door, which is going to be released this holiday season.
Though Eisenberg’s original claim to fame was as an actor playing in films like the Zombieland pictures and The Social Network, he is poised for success as a filmmaker, judging from his first two efforts as a director. He has cast Oscar nominee for The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti, opposite Moore for this new musical comedy which is on the way. This is a winning team which probably can’t lose from an artistic standpoint. Musicals are always a risky proposition, but the talents involved this time are considerably above average.
A Real Pain has not exactly set the box-office on fire thus far but is doing well enough at the specialty box-office to be considered a moderate success. It played at the New York Film Festival earlier this year. The critics have been kind to the picture and have cited the writing and the direction as highlights of the film. Many expect it to have a successful day at Oscar nomination announcement time when it gets a nod for its intelligent screenplay. Though more nods could happen, nothing is certain as of now in regard to which ones they may be.
