Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

The home releases of The Banshees of Inisherin, Tar, WarGames, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, House of the Dragon, and Tales of the Walking Dead are the most noteworthy releases (and pre-orders) on home video and streaming services this week.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Tar and had this to say about the film:

Tár is one of the very best films of the year. Blanchett’s turn in the picture leaps off the screen and the actress is surrounded by a fine ensemble cast. Field’s direction is always probing and the picture is clearly driven by music which makes any scene featuring musical interludes a major asset to helping shape the complexity of the film’s complicated story line. While the ending will divide viewers, keep in mind that there is a reason the film ends as it does.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed The Banshees of Inisherin and had this to say about the film:

The Banshees of Inisherin simply refuses to play it safe in any way, shape or form and is a stronger film as a result. McDonagh is one of the bravest directors working today and he brings fierce, raw intensity to the movie in every frame. Audiences will search their souls to understand these characters and may find themselves drawn to all the central characters of the movie in one way or another. That’s the magic of McDonagh’s direction which is certainly Academy Award worthy.

FilmBook Editor-in-chief Rollo Tomasi reviewed House of the Dragon and had this to say about the TV series:

House of the Dragon is a different animal than Game of Thrones. The viewer can feel that right away, which in this case, works to its benefit. House of the Dragon is familiar yet unfamiliar, with subtle nods to its fore-bearer here and there e.g. the catspaw’s dagger but with just enough Listerine to wash out the bad taste in the viewer’s mouth from what they witnessed in its predecessor’s finale.
