Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

The home releases of Poor Things, Aliens, and Cloverfield are the most noteworthy releases (and pre-orders) on home video and streaming services this week.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and had this to say about the film:

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom doesn’t completely destroy the DC superhero movie contrary to popular belief. Instead, it just remains a mostly mediocre entry in the fading series of pictures that have come out over the past several years…Momoa conveys an ordinary guy as a superhero well, overall, but, at the end of the day, Wan’s movie could have done more with its premise to tighten up its plot and cut out certain characters who don’t serve to entirely move the plot forward.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Anyone But You and had this to say about the film:

Anyone But You is a comedy that’s far from perfect but its stars are, nevertheless, perfectly matched. Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell create that rare physical and emotional on-screen chemistry that makes this new romantic comedy, which is directed by Will Gluck, a success. The stars have natural charisma that immediately draws the audience into their likable characters.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Wish and had this to say about the film:

Wish, directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, is a Disney film with a “once upon a time…” and a “happily ever after” structure but it is, nevertheless, delightful to behold

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed The Color Purple and had this to say about the film:

It’s a bit hard to rank the new The Color Purple as high as Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film version of the material. This is The Color Purple for a new generation and, perhaps, those who haven’t seen the older movie yet will eventually see this as the stronger picture. No matter which one you prefer, Bazawule’s picture is a very distinct work of art and the costumes help define the film’s time period with precision and accuracy.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Poor Things and had this to say about the film:

Lanthimos takes the audiences to interesting, uncharted and, undeniably, creepy territory in a picture which doesn’t shy away from explicit sexuality or some of the hard possibilities of science. Emma Stone is tremendous in the movie but that comes as no surprise. We all saw Cruella, right? However, Stone takes some serious artistic risks in her performance here which many other actresses would have definitely shied away from.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Ferrari and had this to say about the film:

As far as Michael Mann movies go, it would have been nice to see more character development than plot development in Ferrari. However, thanks to his tremendous technical precision in the new film, Mann remains a true master craftsman. Ferrari is thus a ride worth taking.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed I.S.S. and had this to say about the film:
