EZRA (2023): Bleecker Street Picks Up New Robert De Niro Film Set to Premiere in 2024

Bleecker Street Buys Dramedy Ezra

Bleecker Street Films has purchased the U.S. rights to the upcoming Robert De Niro picture, Ezra, which received a warm reception at the Toronto Film Festival.

Ezra, a new comedy/drama from actor/filmmaker Tony Goldwyn, has been purchased for release in 2024 by Bleecker Street Films. Robert De Niro, fresh off his turn in the Oscar-bound Killers of the Flower Moon, has an upcoming dramatic picture called Ezra that also features an all-star cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson and Whoopi Goldberg.

In Ezra, Cannavale serves as a comedy writer/stand-up comic who must come to terms with his choices in his career and his personal life as well. While trying to do this, Cannavale’s character, Max, ends up moving in with his dad (De Niro, who else?) and, soon, Max must try to figure out a way to take care of his autistic son, Ezra (William A. Fitzgerald). Rose Byrne plays Max’s ex-wife.

With the dramatic comedy, Ezra, Bleecker Street Films may have a film that could be successful with mainstream audiences as well as art house frequenters. Unfortunately, a just released Bleecker Street movie, What Happens Later, tanked at the box-office this past weekend despite decent reviews. That picture stars Meg Ryan and David Duchovny and is a charming film. It just wasn’t enough to be the kind of hit Bleecker Street needs to stay on track as a movie studio. That’s not to say that What Happens Later was bad in any way, it’s just that it under performed this past weekend at the domestic box-office.

Goldwyn’s Ezra promises to tackle difficult subject matter in a ferociously funny and sentimental way. With this new movie from a script by Tony Spiridakis, an all-star cast is there to back up the story line. Robert De Niro has been making some intriguing movies these days and Ezra sounds like a brave and ambitious new project which could help Bleecker Street establish themselves as a studio capable of putting out a hit film.

Tony Goldwyn, the director of Ezra, has appeared in romantic films such as Ghost and Bounce but, this time out, he will be working behind the camera. Goldwyn could have what it takes as a filmmaker to make a movie of substance with Bleecker Street’s new acquisition.

With Bleecker Street’s past box-office disappointments like Mr. Malcolm’s List, the studio just can’t seem to nail a good date to release one of their movies. Ezra was once known as Inappropriate Behavior but, regardless of what the new picture is called, with a cast that includes De Niro, you can expect sheer curiosity factor alone could probably open Ezra well above other recent Bleecker Street Films at the box-office.
