Marc by Sofia Review

Marc by Sofia (2025) Film Review, a movie directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Marc Jacobs, Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze.

Watching the new Sofia Coppola documentary, Marc by Sofia, is a New York City fashion lover’s dream come true. What’s surprising about the new documentary is that it’s so smooth and seamless that it should appeal to people all over the States whether they’re fans of the subject, Marc Jacobs, or not. This movie will also be super revealing to people outside of the country who will enjoy watching America’s ideals of fashion expertly displayed with pizzazz and precision. This film is Sofia Coppola at her most personal as she explores the fashion world of Jacobs almost to a degree that the movie is actually scientifically precise in terms of the way it reveals Jacobs’ fashions and passions.

Jacobs, a Parsons School of Design top graduate, is one of the most intriguing subjects of a recent documentary. Jacobs’ talents are unparalleled in the world he chose to embrace and it’s super entertaining to watch his influences which include the “Big Spender” number from Sweet Charity and his relationship with his grandmother. This unique movie occasionally deals with simple questions like: “Why do gay men love Barbra Streisand so much?” However, the documentary reveals layers much more complex than that as Jacobs is shown to be a man who takes just as many risks as he embraces sure things in his life and his career.

There is a funny bit about how Jacobs dresses people for their trials, including the likes of former shoplifter Winona Ryder who was once deemed a kleptomaniac. Then, there’s the exploration of how Jacobs designs dresses for celebrity people like Paris Hilton. There’s not a lot of thought put into some of the choices Jacobs makes, but there is careful, sometimes spontaneous, insights that go into how Jacobs designs the proper clothes for whoever it is that he may be dressing at a particular time, moment or place.

I loved the scenes set around a show that Jacobs orchestrates at the picture’s conclusion where people basically look like they’re variations of Lisa Marie’s Martian Girl from Mars Attacks! The costumes are memorable, the hairstyles are wild and the new documentary is, simply put, an educational and charismatic take on the way Jacobs works and plays. Sofia Coppola occasionally appears in the film to ask Jacobs questions as the movie explores Jacobs’ professional connections and even his own workers which include a man named, humorously enough to me, Duffy.

You can love Vogue and love the famous Louis Vuitton bags, but you can’t prepare for how this movie digs deep inside the fashion world in such a way that it’s bound to have viewers sitting up straight in their seats with their eyes glued to the screen for almost its entire tight 87-minute running time. Jacobs is the central reason the movie works so well. Jacobs can seem so ordinary at times and so extraordinary at others. He admits the shows he puts on are something of his own private fantasies, but the way every fact coalesces to create this documentary is so perfect in many ways. If there’s a problem with the film, it may be the movie doesn’t dig deeper into some of the themes it scratches the surface of like Jacobs’ relationship with a stepfather he didn’t much admire. The real-life archival footage is perfectly selected to include stars like Courtney Love. Whether they were going on trial or walking down the aisle, Jacobs had them covered. Literally.

Still, Marc by Sofia is one of the most stylish and earnest documentaries in years. It’s Sofia and Marc being Sofia and Marc and we come to admire them even more for being who they truly are as human beings. We appreciate Sofia for her giddy appreciation for Marc and adore Marc for being the fashion genius that he became in a world that he, himself, helped create. Some people make their own futures and Jacobs is one of those inspirational people who took the bull by the horns and ran with their art for art’s sake and things actually worked out to the highest degree possible. Jacobs sets a standard of excellence we should all aspire to reach. Coppola is a master filmmaker who fearlessly takes an approach to this material that leaves viewers simply wanting more. This film is all about what drives our two living legends featured in the title. Marc by Sofia. It’s nothing short of a beautiful gem to behold.
