FREE GUY 2: A Sequel to Ryan Reynolds’ Blockbuster Hit Is Not Yet in the Works

Ryan Reynolds Shades Free Guy

Why Free Guy 2 Isn’t Going to Happen…Yet

Director Shawn Levy has revealed the reasons a sequel to 2021’s summer blockbuster, Free Guy, has yet to be put into production.

When Ryan Reynolds starred in 2021’s smash hit comedy, Free Guy, the result was a truly unexpected box-office success. Now, the movie’s director, Shawn Levy, has admitted that he doesn’t want to make a sequel to the smart science-fiction comedy until there is the possibility of it being equally as good as (or better than) the original.

Levy has not been expediting a sequel to Free Guy although if he did, it would excite a lot of fans of the original picture. That 2021 original picture earned $121 million at the domestic box-office during a pandemic and $209 additionally in its international release. The icing on the cake was a solid “A” CinemaScore grade indicating that people loved it. While other directors may have set any script into motion–Levy and Reynolds are waiting for the right screenplay to come about if this project is actually to come into fruition.

In the original film, Reynolds played a non-playable character in a video game who saves his own city/game world from the evil game developer who was played hilariously by Taika Waititi. Apparently when the first film was a hit, Disney wanted a sequel. However, Levy is waiting until something comes along which is truly great. It remains uncertain if the filmmaker and the potential writer(s) of the sequel would bring back Jodie Comer or Joe Keery whose romance blossomed at the end of the 2021 movie.

It is easy to admire Levy’s integrity in not just rushing any script into a manufactured sequel that seems right off the assembly line. Instead, the director wants a product of substance to be produced should the sequel ever get greenlit. At the end of the original, Lil Rel Howery’s security guard character and Reynolds’ own character, Guy, remained in the video game while Jodie Comer and Joe Keery fell in love in the real world. Combining the two worlds isn’t an easy task and the new writer(s) have a lot of work to do to make the potential new movie live up to the original.

Since Free Guy, Reynolds went on to star in one of the best comedies of 2022–Spirited. In that movie (which is destined to become a holiday classic), Reynolds starred opposite funnyman Will Ferrell. Levy is going to soon be directing Deadpool 3, of all movies. It seems Reynolds and Levy have a great working relationship considering their other hit movie from earlier this year, The Adam Project which was a smash on Netflix.

As of now, Free Guy from 2021 stands on Rotten Tomatoes with an 80% approval rating. Whenever Levy and Reynolds find something that they think would be better than (or as good as) the original, we’ll definitely report the news that the sequel to Free Guy has moved forward into production.
