Funnyman Conan O’Brien Says ‘No’ to More Dramatic Roles

Conan O’Brien won’t be playing any more dramatic roles in the immediate future after wowing audiences with his supporting work in the terrifying drama, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

If being the host of the upcoming 97th Academy Awards ceremony wasn’t enough, Conan O’Brien will also be voicing the character of Smarty Pants in the upcoming summer blockbuster, Toy Story 5. What O’Brien won’t be doing again any time soon is taking on another dramatic role in a feature film. If that holds true, and it probably will, according to O’Brien, then the funnyman will go out with a bang as his supporting work in the heavy drama, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, was nothing short of terrific.

O’Brien turned heads when he appeared in the aforementioned dramatic movie that showcased actress Rose Byrne in an Oscar-worthy leading role. In the movie, O’Brien portrays a therapist for Byrne’s character who is also a therapist herself. Byrne’s Linda is going through hell, to say the least, as her daughter has a tube inside her and Linda must single-handedly care for her as her husband (Christian Slater) is away on business. Cast against type, O’Brien more than held his own beside Byrne and that’s saying a lot considering the quality of Byrne’s work in the sensational A24 release which is soon headed to HBO Max.

What made O’Brien’s work unique in the picture is that his character is forced to be the “straight” one to Byrne’s Linda who is slowly, but surely, spiraling out of control the more the film’s plot progresses. With Toy Story 5 due right before the start of summer, June 19th, O’Brien looks to branch out to more fun material. He took on the project, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, because he liked the movie’s script, its director, Mary Bronstein, and was a huge fan of Rose Byrne.

It’s kind of fitting for O’Brien to be hosting the 97th Academy Awards where Byrne is currently the front-runner to take home the top prize for Best Actress. Byrne’s showstopping performance won a standing ovation at a screening at this year’s New York Film Festival which I attended and O’Brien was also on-hand to talk about the film at the festival, as was director Bronstein.

Although O’Brien showed great potential as a dramatic actor for future projects, tickling people’s funny bones is the quality that the comedian/actor is most known for. It will be great to have O’Brien on board hosting the Oscars where some of the top films of the year will most likely be mentioned in his opening monologue on the awards show. What will he do with jokes that could be based on One Battle After Another, Sinners and other front-runners throughout the night? Will O’Brien make us laugh or show a more serious side like he did in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You at the ceremony? I think we all know the answer there.
