Ghost Remake On the Horizon

Channing Tatum’s production company, Free Association, has secured the rights to 1990’s Ghost which Tatum plans to remake.

In 1990, the big summer blockbuster was a “little movie that could” called Ghost. That Oscar-nominated picture earned $217 million domestically and scored a coveted “A” CinemaScore. Teenagers and adults, alike, went back to the theater again and again during its run to see the film with friends and family. Now, Channing Tatum’s company, Free Association, has the rights to the picture and plans to rework the material for modern times.

Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze were the stars of the 1990 picture that won the hearts of America and the world, especially with its renowned scene of lovers Moore and Swayze doing pottery together. Whoopi Goldberg took home the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance as a spiritual female psychic who served as a guide to the afterlife and helped Swayze’s deceased character’s ghost communicate with the love of his life, played by Moore.

Tatum’s remake (in which Tatum, himself, could play the role which Swayze originated) will make some key changes to the plot which will update the story line for today’s world. We don’t know what exactly Tatum will be doing with the script for the reworking of Ghost but the actor claimed there were “problematic stereotypes” within the great original film.

A television show based on Ghost was once in the works. A television series actually was developed but never ended up seeing the light of day. Also, a Japanese film was indeed made called Ghost: In Your Arms Again but that film played with the material and wasn’t a straight remake. It was, however, very well received. It featured the ghost of the woman lover rather than the man in the story’s couple.

Tatum is an acclaimed actor who will soon be seen in Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third film in the successful male stripper Magic Mike movie trilogy. Tatum is, perhaps, known best for his 2012 love story, The Vow, where the actor played opposite Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) in a love story where McAdams’ character loses her memory and forgets the man she loved (played by Tatum). The Vow earned $125 million domestically and certainly gave off romantic vibes similar to the 1990 film Ghost. CinemaScore audiences didn’t love the film as much, though, awarding it a mere “B” CinemaScore.

Whether the new Ghost lives up to its predecessor or not, it will be a great way to introduce one of the most romantic stories of all-time to a new audience which will certainly love it especially if Tatum ends up starring in it.
