Ben McKenzie Believes Gotham’s Second Season Will Be Better. Things haven’t gone well for Gotham’s first season with fans having mixed feelings about the direction of the Fox series. Well, actor Ben McKenzie has high hopes that the second season will be better than the first.

So much promotion for the second season of Gotham has primarily focused on the ‘Rise of the Villains’, with villains like Tigress, Firefly, and Mr. Freeze bound to make an appearance. Writers are continuing to explore the origins of Batman’s most famous villains for the upcoming season. However, the first season didn’t go deep into these villains and instead used a ‘villain-of-the-week’ approach, which didn’t fare well with fans. Series lead Ben McKenzie recently spoke with EW about what he thought went wrong with the first season. “I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever,” he admitted. “That was just a mistake. We should’ve never done it.”

But it seems that the actor still believes that the show’s sophomore run will be better. “The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them,” he stated, “Whether they’re evil or good, they are entertaining. So that’s what we’re doing in season 2. [It’s] really kick ass. I think it’s exactly what the fans want to see.”

Even though the show did well in the ratings, Gotham’s direction has divided Batman fans so it will be interesting to see if they would come back for a second season. With these changes coming, would you give the show another chance?
