Netflix acquires Gotham Streaming Rights. In what is to be the first ever deal for the fall broadcast season before a premiere, Netflix reached an agreement with Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution for Fox‘s upcoming Batman-prequel series Gotham. Reported on Deadline, this would mean that the first season and any future seasons of Gotham will be available on the streaming service in the US and other territories worldwide.

Premiering on September 22 on FOX, the series will explore the untold origin stories of Gotham City’s villains before Bruce Wayne became Batman. Gotham stars Ben MecKenzie as the young detective James Gordon who with his mentor Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) tries to clean the streets from criminals such as Fish Mooney and Oswald Cobblepot.

“Gotham is the most anticipated new series of the fall season and we are thrilled to offer it to our members around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. “The Batman origin story is sure to have massive global appeal so it is fitting that, along with Warner Television, we have created a new model for distributing a show that international and domestic audiences will love.”

The action-packed crime drama explores an entirely new chapter that hasn’t been explored before in the DC Comics lore. Gotham will explore the rise of James Gordon as he goes from rookie cop to the future police commissioner and his relationship with the young Bruce Wayne before he becomes the Dark Knight.

“In this era of new business models and expanding windows, this is an unprecedented deal for our company and our industry,” said Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, President, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution. “While we typically license our programming country by country, we have licensed this very special series to Netflix on a multi-territory basis. Netflix is a perfect home for ‘Gotham’ following its initial broadcast in each respective country, giving Netflix subscribers the opportunity to catch-up prior to the new season, whether they’re already fans or discovering it for the first time.”

Gotham stars Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Jada Pinkett Smith, Robin Lord Taylor, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Clare Foley, Zabryna Guevara, Erin Richards, Sara Paxton, Sean Pertwee, David Zayas, and Kyle Massey.
