HERE (2024): Sony Moves Up Release Date for Robert Zemeckis’ Upcoming Dramatic Film

Forrest Gump’s Tom Hanks and Robin Wright’s New Film To Open Early

Tri-Star will be releasing the new forthcoming Sony picture, Here, wide on November 1st which is a few weeks earlier than was originally anticipated.

Here is director Robert Zemeckis’ latest drama and it spans generations and different time frames to tell a compelling story that will showcase the talents of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright who were unstoppable in 1994’s classic Zemeckis film, Forrest Gump. This may be the only real wide release that weekend and Tri-Star is most likely hoping that strong word of mouth will build for the film in time for some big Thanksgiving weekend box-office returns.

While this is certainly good news for those who are waiting to see this movie, it also could spell trouble because no major festival is featuring this film out of Toronto, Telluride and Venice. Perhaps, Sony wants to get it out of the way before the big box-office blockbusters dig into it and seize its box-office potential. Opening the film early could get at least some positive word of mouth building but it will rely heavily on positive reviews to be a successful movie from a financial standpoint.

In June, it was announced that Here would open wide on November 15th which wouldn’t give it much time for good word of mouth to help it in time for Thanksgiving weekend. At one point, it was supposed to open in a limited run on November 15th and go wider the following two weekends. The shuffling of release dates is either a sign that Tri-Star/Miramax has a probable hit on their hands or that they don’t know when the best time to open the movie is. This is a film which could earn mediocre returns at the box-office if it’s not handled carefully.

Sentimental fans of Forrest Gump are sure to take to Here in a positive way. It’s hard to be sure of any Oscar nomination potential prospects for the project given its lack of upcoming festival exposure. It could just be taking the old-fashioned route that Hollywood films took back in the 1990’s. Sony could do a number of different things to work a successful release strategy. The studio may sneak preview Here the week before it opens but a similar such practice didn’t help Fly Me to the Moon much. That inspired comic drama sadly faltered at the box-office.

Here is, perhaps, the biggest question mark of the holiday movie season. Will it sink or swim at the box-office and how will it do with critics, not to mention movie-going audiences? An “A” CinemaScore will be required for Here to build on the word of mouth it needs to be the hit that the studio may be hoping for.
