Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

My top pick for release this week is the neo-noir You Were Never Really Here. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the film is about a traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, tracking down missing girls for a living. I loved the style of the movie, and felt that it was Taxi Driver meets Taken. The film was released by Amazon Studios, and did not fare very well with audiences at the box office. However, I feel that this film will endure in home release as more people discover this hidden gem.

Also releasing this week is the latest action blockbuster starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Warner Bros. Rampage. The story follows three different animals infected with a dangerous pathogen, a primatologist and a geneticist team up to stop them from destroying Chicago. The film continues the success The Rock has had with audiences, grossing $425 million worldwide. He has developed a solid working relationship with director Brad Peyton, this being their third picture together (after San Andreas and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, both of which did very well at the box office).

An older film releasing courtesy of Criterion is Steven Soderbergh’s directorial debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape. The movie deals with some very serious themes including sexuality, satisfaction, jealousy, sisters’ relationship, marital problems and loyalty. The film was lauded by critics upon release, winning the Palme D’Or and nominated for the best writing academy award. It launched the career of Soderbergh, who went on to direct some of the best films of the last decade, including Ocean’s 11, The Informant! and Traffic.
