Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

This week, one of the most iconic action-horror movies of the 1980’s makes its debut on 4K Blu-ray; John McTiernan’s Predator. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film makes great use of the late Stan Winston’s creature effects, outstanding action sequences, and some instantly quotable Arnold lines. What makes this film stand apart from the others, in my opinion, are the supporting characters and development they’re given. It’s probably one of the most fondly remembered 80’s films, thanks to its ability to build up atmosphere and suspense.

Also releasing courtesy of Shout Factory is John Carpenter’s Someone’s Watching Me! The movie was long considered among cinephiles as “the lost Carpenter film” as copies were difficult to come by until release on DVD. It was made for TV, and debuted right before his iconic Halloween. One can see the early precursors here that would define Carpenters work (voyeurism, an unstoppable evil, women in trouble). The film would begin John Carpenters successful working (and personal) relationship with Adrienne Barbeau. They first made Someones Watching Me! and later The Fog and Escape from New York.

A 2018 release coming to Blu-ray is Life of the Party, the latest raunch comedy from Melissa McCarthy. The films premise is after her husband abruptly asks for a divorce, a middle-aged mother returns to college in order to complete her degree. The movie fared somewhat successfully with audiences, grossing $65 million worldwide. I have yet to see this, and am not a McCarthy fan. Unless you are, others probably need not apply.
