Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

In a relatively slow week for new releases, Star Wars Rebels: Season 4 leads off for my top pick of the week. The final season of the show follows a group of rebels, taking place in-between Star Wars Episode III and Episode IV during the reign of the Empire. The show has been well received by fans, acting as an heir-apparent the The Clone Wars TV series. I particularly enjoy the story lines they give existing characters like Obi-Wan, Tarkin and Darth Vader. The animation is also very impressive, especially the action scenes.

Also releasing this week is Dark Crimes. Directed by Alexandros Avranas and starring Jim Carrey (in his first film since Dumb and Dumber To in 2014), the film follows Tadek, a police officer who finds similarities between the assassination of a policeman and a crime narrated in a book. The premise is eerily similar to Carrey’s The Number 23, and was equally maligned by critics. It’s a shame that Carrey, who was once one of the most bankable comedians, has decided to not star in movies as much anymore.

Another release this week is James Cameron’s directorial debut, Piranha II: The Spawning. It is hard to believe that Cameron, the guy who brought us The Terminator, Aliens and Titanic directed this film. The plot is a scuba diving instructor, her biochemist boyfriend, and her police chief ex-husband try to link a series of bizarre deaths to a mutant strain of piranha fish. Trying to capture some of the success of Jaws, the film was a box office bomb and got horrible reviews. Cameron jokingly refers to it today as “the best flying piranha film ever made”.
