HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS 2: THE GRINCH’S WORLD: Ron Howard Set to Direct Jim Carrey in a Sequel to a Famous Holiday Movie
Sequel to 2000’s Grinch Movie in the Works
Jim Carrey will be reprising his role as the mean-spirited “Grinch” in Ron Howard‘s sequel to the 2000 holiday movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Despite rumors of possibly retiring, Jim Carrey will be back on the screen again in a sequel to the 2000 hit movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Ron Howard, who directed the original movie, will be behind the camera once again for part 2. Carrey will be featured in the role of the Grinch once again, too, but it is a bit unclear what other characters will be in the new sequel which is to be titled, How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2: The Grinch’s World.
To be perfectly clear, some critics despised the 2000 movie from Universal and Imagine while others enjoyed it. The divide is straight down the middle with a 50% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating from critics. The CinemaScore grade for the old film was much better at an “A-” and the box-office was strong for the picture back then as the film earned about $265 million domestically which was an awesome gross for a seasonal film.
In the 2000 movie, Carrey played the despicable green Grinch. In 2018, an animated version of the material called The Grinch made even more money than the 2000 movie. That animated picture earned about $7 million more than the 2000 picture domestically and cleaned up overseas with an additional $280 million and the same CinemaScore approval as the 2000 movie. Critics were kinder to the animated movie than the live-action one with a higher 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Benedict Cumberbatch voiced the lead character in the animated movie, not Carrey.
The actress who played the little girl from the first film, Taylor Momsen is all grown up so we don’t know if she’ll make an appearance in the sequel which seems to be a direct follow-up to the 2000 predecessor. Christine Baranski and Molly Shannon also appeared in the 2000 box-office hit.
Carrey has had some true success with his villain role in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise movies which have thrived at the box-office and nobody can play a bad guy quite the same way Carrey can. There is a long-delayed The Cat in the Hat animated movie due out on November 6th this year and that film could whet the appetite for movies featuring other Dr. Seuss characters such as the Grinch.
Jim Carrey was a huge box-office draw in the 1990’s with movies like the Ace Ventura films, Dumb and Dumber and Liar Liar cementing his status as one of the highest paid actors of his time. It remains to be seen whether or not the new Grinch movie will feature other big name stars or just Carrey and a few notable character actors.
