This reminds of the Marlon Brando documentary we reported on a few months ago, Listen To Me Marlon, in that its a retrospective documentary on an iconic screen legend that is told largely through his/her own words. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the Brando documentary yet, so I can’t speak on the quality and revelations garnered by having the subject of the documentary tell his/her own story, but its an enticing device that I’m curious to take a look at. This also brought up memories of Senna (2010), as that film was comprised entirely of authentic footage – its the limiting device that is found in all three of these docs. We’ll see how well this works out for Ingrid Bergman In Her own Words, soon enough.

According to FirstShowing, Ingrid Bergman In Her Own Words is a “captivating look behind the scenes of the remarkable life of a young Swedish girl who became one of the most celebrated actresses of American and World cinema. Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words is directed by Swedish filmmaker/film critic Stig Björkman, of Walk on Water If You Can, Behind the Shutters and Tranceformer – A Portrait of Lars von Trier previously. The documentary first premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and also played at the Vancouver and New York Film Festivals. Rialto Pictures will open Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words in limited US theaters on November 13th this fall.”
