Jake Gyllenhaal Set to Return for More Action in Road House Sequel

It has been announced that a sequel to this year’s streaming hit, Road House, is officially in the works.

When Jake Gyllenhaal took over a role made famous by Patrick Swayze in a remake of the late 1980’s classic, Road House, eyebrows were certainly raised. People were pleasantly surprised, however. Not only was the film a streaming smash hit, it is now officially getting a sequel. Gyllenhaal is poised to return to his role of “Dalton” for another go-around. Amazon MGM has released this news and fans of the recent remake (which premiered a couple of months ago) couldn’t be more excited.

It has been said that the recent remake “attracted nearly 80 million viewers.” It was also stated that 50 million of those viewers were “attracted” during the first two weeks of play of the Gyllenhaal remake. There was quite a large supporting cast in the Road House remake and it is not certain which stars will be back, if any, besides Gyllenhaal. The Oscar-nominated actor has now become a major action hero with the recent remake getting a large viewership which was appreciative of the movie’s style.

Swayze’s version of Road House was not a major hit right out of the gate. It made $30 million at the box-office (which was excellent in 1989) but was not as large a hit as, say, Swayze’s non-action movies, Dirty Dancing or Ghost. Appreciation for the old film was garnered over decades. A remake was a long time in the making and when it was finally unveiled, the movie lived up to the hype which is the secret as to why it was so successful in its streaming run.

Doug Liman directed the remake of Road House. It was highly publicized that Liman was hoping for a theatrical release although the possibility of that may or may not have ever been promised to him by the studio. Of course, Amazon MGM declares that it was pretty much always agreed upon that the film would be sent to streaming and, obviously, that appears to have been the right choice, judging from the viewership the film has attained.

Will Liman come back to direct the sequel that is in the works? It doesn’t look likely though you could never rule anything out. Gyllenhaal will be back in action soon. He proved himself worthy of the role of “Dalton” and fans probably would not want to see a sequel without him appearing in it. Keep an eye out for updates on this exciting sequel as they develop.
