James Cameron’s Next Avatar Movies Will Come Out in Due Time

Though James Cameron‘s follow-up movies in the Avatar series were supposed to come out every two years, there may be a little more time in-between films.

James Cameron has been working on Avatar 3 and Avatar 4. Cameron has gone as far as already shooting specific scenes for those future sequels. According to Cameron, certain scenes of Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar 3 were made contemporaneously with a dash of Avatar 4‘s footage thrown in for good measure. That’s because characters will age in the fourth installment and Cameron wanted to take care of certain aspects of the script in regards to the filming process. These stories have seemingly been written already. It’s Cameron’s approach to getting them made which could potentially delay the process of them actually making it to theaters on time.

If what Cameron has said holds true, Avatar 3 will come out in two years time but Avatar 4 could take up to three years after that to come out. Then, it would be back to two years again for Avatar 5. Though Avatar: The Way of Water has done remarkably well at the worldwide box-office, keeping up the momentum of the movie series could be somewhat challenging unless the quality of these pictures is consistently remarkable. The passage of time helped moviegoers return to theaters for Avatar: The Way of Water but what could happen if these pictures come out a bit too frequently? Perhaps, that extra third year between Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 will be a good idea so the chips can fall where they may and we can see if audiences are still interested in exploring these characters further after Avatar 3. Cameron seems to be making these pictures exciting for fans of the franchise but when is it potentially overkill?

Right now, the Avatar series shows no signs of letting up anytime soon but one must remember the passage of about 13 years of time in-between the first two pictures. Avatar: The Way of Water has racked up an impressive series of nominations from awards branches and, also, excellent audience response from those who have gone to see it in theaters. It earned a straight “A” from CinemaScore audiences.

Cameron is certainly determined to finish the rest of his five Avatar films at a quicker pace this time out. He believes there was a reason for the passage of time between the first two pictures. That reason may have been to get all the material ready in order to unveil it at more regular intervals.

While it’s doubtful any Avatar film could actually bomb at the box-office given the franchise’s worldwide appeal, the choice to shoot at least three of the films’ scenes (in Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4) almost simultaneously is still a rather daring choice. Why? A lot of other films aren’t performing so well at the domestic box-office. It seems Cameron’s movie is one of the few successes this holiday season. However, it is almost certain Cameron will eventually wrap his promised slate of Avatar films and get them all to the public as quickly as possible.
