Keanu Reeves Box-Office Flop GOOD FORTUNE Makes Barack Obama’s List of Favorite Films of 2025

Good Fortune Makes Obama’s Favorite Movies List

A Keanu Reeves box-office dud, Good Fortune, has made Barack Obama‘s Top Movies of 2025 list.

Movie criticism is mostly subjective but sometimes a film makes an appearance on a year end’s best movies list that just leaves people scratching their heads in wonder. This year, that film is Good Fortune, a mediocre comedy about an angel played by Keanu Reeves who teaches his latest assignment some lessons in life. Despite a terrible $16 million domestic box-office gross, Obama found something valuable in the Keanu Reeves starrer which co-stars Seth Rogen. Although it wasn’t a good film in my opinion, the picture has amassed an impressive 79% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s no accounting for the public’s taste, I suppose, or maybe, the movie is worth a second viewing to see if it’s actually better the second time around.

Elsewhere on Obama’s list were Oscar bait films such as Train Dreams and One Battle After Another. Obama picked Netflix’s Jay Kelly as one of his favorite pictures of the year as well. The other surprise on the list was Orwell: 2+2=5, a documentary about the life and work of controversial author George Orwell of 1984 fame.

Obama picked winners like Sinners and Hamnet as well for his favorite movies of 2025 list which also appeared on my 10 best films of 2025 list. Also appearing on Obama’s list were critically acclaimed gems like Sentimental Value and It Was Just an Accident. A total of 11 films appeared on Obama’s top movies of the year list.

A dark horse candidate for a Best Picture Oscar nomination and a shoo-in for a Best International Feature Film Academy Award nod is The Secret Agent which rounded out Obama’s list of the 10 (or 11) best movies of the year. Good Fortune‘s inclusion on this list was the most surprising thing as Obama’s taste is usually in line with the majority of U.S. film critics. The last time Obama went out on a limb with one of his picks was when he chose Leave the World Behind as one of the best of 2023. I also picked that one too although Obama had much closer ties to it being that his own production company produced it.

Don’t expect Good Fortune to receive any Academy Award nominations any time soon, though. Keanu Reeves is the last person being mentioned these days for a Best Actor nomination with a list of potential candidates that includes Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent, George Clooney for Jay Kelly and Michael B. Jordan for Sinners. Still, the fact that Obama found something in a box-office dud like Good Fortune proves he’s not totally influenced by the critics and has his own unique taste in motion pictures.
