Sean Penn Surprises with BAFTA Win For ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER

Sean Penn Wins Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTA Awards

One Battle After Another won several major prizes at this year’s BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards ceremony as Sean Penn won in the Best Supporting Actor category for the aforementioned film.

This year’s BAFTA awards are definitely not a preliminary version of the Oscars this year. Well, not in the acting categories anyway. In fact, the BAFTA Best Actor winner isn’t even nominated for an Academy Award. However, things went down as expected in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay as Paul Thomas Anderson and his decorated film, One Battle After Another, won all three of those top awards at BAFTA. Anderson’s film also won in the category of Best Editing. Sentimental Value was deservedly chosen as Best Film Not in the English Language.

Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) lost out to Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) for Best Actress while Robert Aramayo (I Swear) swooped the Best Actor honors from Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) for Best Actor. Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) scored Best Supporting Actress over Amy Madigan (Weapons) and Sean Penn (One Battle After Another) bested Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value) for Best Supporting Actor. This looks like a line-up of winners that is very unlikely to cross over to the Oscars with the exception of maybe Buckley who could win Best Actress at the Academy Awards for the Best British Film BAFTA award winner today, Hamnet.

Sean Penn was amazing, astonishing even, in One Battle After Another, but he’s a long-shot to win the Oscar over Stellan Skarsgård despite giving one perfectly intense performance. Stellan Skarsgård has been long regarded in Hollywood and has never won before for his work while Penn has two leading Best Actor trophies under his belt from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Though Penn does, technically, deserve to win, it feels like a shot in the dark to say he’s a shoo-in to win a third Academy Award at this particular point in time.

Wunmi Mosaku was excellent in Sinners, bu the win feels more like a nod to the film itself which was darn close to winning Best Film and was, perhaps, even a better film than One Battle After Another. The Oscars may choose to decorate character actress, Amy Madigan, instead who has been highly regarded for a long time in Hollywood and hasn’t ever won an Oscar. There’s still plenty of time for Mosaku to win an Oscar and she’s got a lot of potential for even better performances than the one she gave in Sinners. Sinners did take home Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score, too, at the BAFTA awards today.

Jessie Buckley vs Rose Byrne is the major race at the Oscars this season and it’s in the category of Best Actress. Buckley will probably win the Oscar although a tie would be really the fairest thing to do here. Demi Moore lost last year for her turn in The Substance because it was a very dark film and Byrne faces the same challenge to win this year with her remarkable role in the very dark, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
