ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER Wins Best Feature at 2025 Gotham Film Awards
Acclaimed Movie Receives Best Feature Award at Gotham Ceremony
One Battle After Another and It Was Just an Accident won big at the 2025 Gotham Awards ceremony, boosting their odds for Oscar nominations which were pretty high already.
One Battle After Another won Best Feature at the Gotham Awards, a prestigious event which used to cap the budgets of their honored films. The Paul Thomas Anderson-directed big-budget film is expected to clean up at the Golden Globes and the Oscars next year. It Was Just an Accident took home Best International Feature, Best Director (Jafar Panahi) and Best Original Screenplay. Anderson accepted Gotham’s honor on behalf of the winning feature film, One Battle After Another, and believed the win was a bit of a surprise. Panahi dedicated his own win to independent filmmakers around the world.
The acting winners were “off” a bit from what was predicted, but nevertheless, pleasantly surprised most viewers of the ceremony. Sopé Dìrísù won best lead performance for his work in My Father’s Shadow which also scored the breakthrough director award as well. Wunmi Mosaku took the best supporting performance honor for her work in the great Ryan Coogler film, Sinners. Both acting wins came out of left field, but everybody seemed happy with the results. Speaking of Coogler, his terrific film received the ensemble tribute which included an acceptance speech from the main star, Michael B. Jordan, among other actors from the film as well.
Noah Baumbach (Jay Kelly) accepted his honor for the directing tribute that Gotham bestowed upon him. Tessa Thompson received the Spotlight tribute for her work on the fine, Hedda. Frankenstein from Netflix and Gullermo del Toro received the Vanguard tribute, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson earned the musical tribute for Song Sung Blue and Julia Roberts and Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt took the Visionary tribute.
Rose Byrne was supposed to take lead acting honors at the ceremony last night for her powerful work in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, according to early predictions. Things didn’t pan out on her behalf this time, however, but she’s still pegged to win many other major awards for her work on the stellar film. There was a lot of competition and for Sopé Dìrísù to virtually come out of “nowhere” and beat Byrne for the little-seen My Father’s Shadow was truly an unforeseen event. Sinners, One Battle After Another and It Was Just an Accident are officially front runners for Best Picture nominations at next year’s Oscars ceremony.
There is usually a correlation between what movie wins Best Feature at the Gotham Awards and what one takes home the Best Picture at the Oscars, but last year, Anora swept the Oscars without having won the Best Feature at the Gotham Awards, so anything can happen in future award races for 2025 films. The New York Film Critics will speak out on their winners for the year next, so keep your eyes open as we reveal that list later on today.
