Sinners Looks to Make a Killing at Critics Choice Awards

Chelsea Handler will be hosting the 31st Critics Choice Awards and Sinners is looking like the probable front runner for Best Picture at this particular point in time.

Sinners was certainly one of the most acclaimed movies of 2025 and if not for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, Sinners would be the definite winner of the Best Picture award at the upcoming Critics Choice Awards happening on January 4th. Filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s Sinners will be neck and neck with One Battle After Another in one of the tightest Best Picture races in years. The best picture and best director categories aren’t the only places where the suspense lies. Rose Byrne seems like a shoo-in to take home Best Actress for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, but the other acting categories are anything but sure things for the front runners in their respective races.

Timothée Chalamet is looking like he’s in pretty good shape to win Best Actor for the box-office hit, Marty Supreme, even if Ethan Hawke keeps getting sentimental votes for his wonderful career every day for his tremendous work in Blue Moon. In the Best Supporting Actor category, Stellan Skarsgård is winning “sentimental” votes as well for his phenomenal performance in Sentimental Value. His biggest competition comes in the form of Benicio Del Toro for his turn in the critical darling, One Battle After Another.

Best Supporting Actress is a big question mark in terms of who will take home that trophy at the Critics Choice Awards. Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value) is in a very tight race with Amy Madigan (Weapons) for Best Supporting Actress, but it’s almost any of the nominated women’s trophy to win. Ariana Grande could sneak away with a win for Wicked: For Good, but it’s very unlikely given that film’s tepid critical reception. Wunmi Mosaku has also been building a bit of traction for her wonderful turn in Sinners.

Jacobi Jupe (Hamnet) and Miles Caton (Sinners) are in another very heated race to win the Best Young Actor award at the CCA. Best Original Screenplay is looking like it will go to Sinners‘ Ryan Coogler, but don’t count out the brilliant script for Marty Supreme to pull an upset. Best Adapted Screenplay looks like it will certainly go to One Battle After Another. Meanwhile, Sinners is most likely a sure thing for Best Cinematography.

Marty Supreme could sneak off with Best Editing due to its perfect energy levels and excellent pacing, but it will be challenged by several other films, including Sinners. Best Comedy is the toughest category to predict with The Phoenician Scheme looking like the probable winner right now as the Wes Anderson movie was arguably the best reviewed of the nominated bunch (which includes the sleeper hit, Eternity). It Was Just an Accident is a sure thing to win Best International Film. Sinners is going into awards night with 17 nominations from the Critics Choice Association.
