Jessie Buckley Wins Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards While ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER Takes Best Picture
Jessie Buckley Secures Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards
Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) bested Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) in a minor upset for Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards tonight.
Though Rose Byrne’s performance was amazing in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Jessie Buckley was also stellar in Hamnet as well. Buckley was triumphant over Byrne at the Critics Choice Awards in a surprising development. In addition, Timothée Chalamet secured Best Actor for his brilliant work in Marty Supreme over Ethan Hawke’s more sentimental turn in Blue Moon. This news may dampen Hawke’s chances at winning a Best Actor Oscar, but the Actor (SAG) nods later this week will help paint a clearer picture of who, exactly, will win in the categories of Best Actor and Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
A24 didn’t really market If I Had Legs I’d Kick You as well as it could have considering the movie didn’t do much more than $1 million at the domestic box-office. Conversely, Hamnet was much more well-received by general audiences which makes Buckley’s win not a true surprise. Buckley was great so I’ll hold words saying that Byrne really deserved the win, for now.
Chalamet was truly deserving of the award he won in the intense Marty Supreme and the work the actor did was rewarded accordingly. It also helped that Marty Supreme did extremely well in its early stages at the box-office thus far. In the interim, Paul Thomas Anderson won Best Director from the CCA for his work on the much loved One Battle After Another. Anderson’s speech was short and sweet and the filmmaker showed thanks to the critics who supported his much adored film.
Best Picture went to One Battle After Another which struggled over the course of the night in some other categories. Sinners actually won more awards over the course of the evening tonight with the CCA, but Anderson’s film ultimately proved to be the triumphant winner of the coveted top award. The Oscars, occasionally, divide the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars between two films every now and then and may do so this year especially considering, over the last three years, they matched the categories in terms of both director and film. Sinners and One Battle After Another are still top candidates for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, but Best Director at the Oscars being Paul Thomas Anderson is a fact that may just have been decided tonight.
