The 2025 Gotham Award Nominations Show a Few Great Movies Plenty of Love

Gotham Nominations Prove to Be Exciting and Fair

This year’s Gotham Award nominations promise an exciting race with some of the best performances and movies of the year in the running for awards.

Rose Byrne flat-out delivered the best performance of the year so far for her work in the spellbinding drama, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and the Gotham Awards have taken notice. That picture, directed by Mary Bronstein, earned four coveted Gotham nominations, including nods for star Byrne and filmmaker Bronstein. It was One Battle After Another, however, which led the Gotham nominations with a whopping six nods versus four for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. One Battle After Another felt like a “Hollywood” film, but it made the Gotham cut due to the fact that many critics have deemed it a “masterpiece.” Chase Infiniti from that picture received a Best Breakthrough Performer nod. She’ll likely win.

The films nominated for Best Picture this year were: One Battle After Another, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Bugonia, East of Wall, Hamnet, Familiar Touch, Lurker, Sorry, Baby, The Testament of Ann Lee and Train Dreams.

The ten best performances that were nominated in the leading category were: the likely winner Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Lee Byung-hun (No Other Choice), Sopé Dìrísù (My Father’s Shadow), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent), Josh O’Connor (The Mastermind), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee) and Tess Thompson (Hedda).

The supporting contenders are: Benicio Del Toro (One Battle After Another), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), Indya Moore (Father Mother Sister Brother), Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), Adam Sandler (Jay Kelly), Andrew Scott (Blue Moon), Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) and a couple of Skarsgårds, Alexander (Pillion) and Stellan (Sentimental Value). Stellan should sew up that win pretty easily. It was terrific to see Sandler in such stellar company for a terrific turn in Jay Kelly. Sean Penn was snubbed for his work in One Battle After Another despite winning many accolades for the performance in the film. Leonardo DiCaprio was also slighted in the lead category for the same film.

Eva Victor and Mary Bronstein’s A24 films, Sorry, Baby and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You nailed the two respective ladies Best Original Screenplay nods while Bronstein got a Best Director nomination as well. Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another) could win the Best Director trophy, but if he doesn’t, Bronstein is most likely next in line. It was nice to see Kelly Reichardt get a nod for helming the gem, The Mastermind. The directors of It Was Just an Accident and Sirât rounded out the five filmmakers chosen in that category. One of our absolute favorites this year, Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, got nominated for Best International Feature. That nod brought a big smile to many people’s faces who were happy to see the picture get some acknowledgement.

It’s hard to be objective in a year where there are so many great films, but Rose Byrne poured so much energy into her performance, it would be excellent (and fair) to see her earn the Gotham Award for Best Actress. Objectively, it seemed like the most difficult role to pull off from the ones we’ve seen so far. We will be reviewing the ones we haven’t soon so keep your eyes open for those reviews!
