Brad Pitt will soon be returning to the big screen, supposedly reprising a role that was made famous in 2013’s international box-office success, World War Z.

Brad Pitt is returning to the zombie-themed world of World War Z for a sequel, set to be directed by Conclave helmer, Edward Berger. Marc Forster directed the original science-fiction hit that featured a now Oscar-winner, Brad Pitt, in the principal role. That 2013 picture earned a “B+” CinemaScore from audiences back when it first came out. It was an entertaining action film in which it was discovered that the zombies could stay away from certain types of people, but how the zombies be re-introduced in the follow-up film has yet to be shared with the public.

World War Z made $202 million domestically, which could have marked it as a disappointment given its $190 million budget. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, the 2013 picture earned an additional $337 million and thus a sequel seems like a potentially profitable idea now, especially considering that the first film has become something of a cult favorite. Paramount Pictures, which distributed the first film, would also be backing the upcoming sequel set to feature Pitt again, alongside Plan B Entertainment.

Though the change over to the new director seems like an odd choice, Pitt has just wrapped a movie with Berger titled, Riders. Apparently, the pair was itching to work together again, and fans of World War Z have been waiting over a decade for Pitt to bounce back for a sequel. It was originally an idea for Pitt and his Se7en director, David Fincher, to make a follow-up to World War Z, but Fincher excited the project, and it has now been picked up with Berger set to direct.

Meanwhile, Pitt has a movie about his adventurer character and a dog set in the wilderness titled, Heart of the Beast, opening next Friday. It involves a plane crash in its main storyline. That film has been praised in early social media reactions, and is apparently a crowd-pleasing tearjerker. It is a Paramount Pictures release, just like World War Z was. FilmBook expects an “A” CinemaScore and at least $50 million domestically at the box-office for Heart of the Beast.

Brad Pitt is known for great films like Fight Club and Moneyball, but he won his first acting Oscar for co-starring in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 gem, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. Pitt deserved to win a leading Academy Award for his work in Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but lost out to Sean Penn for his bravura turn in Milk.
