A Sequel to 2003’s HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS In Development at Paramount

Sequel to 2003 Rom-Com on the Table at Paramount
A sequel to a romantic comedy from 2003, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, may be coming into fruition at Paramount Pictures.
Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson launched their careers even further back in 2003’s genuinely funny rom-com, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Now, some 23 years later, a sequel has been proposed at Paramount Pictures, to be produced by Hudson. No word yet if she’ll star in the movie, but she may have some kind of role in the film being that Hudson is now a two-time Oscar nominee, following her great turn in last year’s Song Sung Blue. She’s obviously a hot commodity once again after some doubt about her choices of roles back when she made a major disappointment, Music, which flopped several years back.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was a monster-sized hit at the domestic box-office when it was originally released. It earned $105 million domestically back then, and was the definitive rom-com of its time, teaching its viewers how to get rid of an unwanted guy who has a romantic interest in them in -you guessed it- 10 days.
CinemaScore audiences were quite kind to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and bestowed an “A-” grade upon it, while the critics weren’t really that impressed, giving the movie a mere 42% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, the fact that the 2003 movie made so much money was a testament to the charms of its stars and the drawing power of magazine article-driven movies like that one and 13 Going on 30, which was released just a year later by a competing studio, Sony.
Of course, the script hasn’t been written for the sequel quite yet, so anything goes at this particular point in time. We’d like to guess that the movie won’t be about Hudson and McConaughey’s characters falling in love since they already did that in the 2003 film. However, they may well be in the movie, and with films like the new Focker-In-Law reviving old franchises, it makes perfect sense that Paramount wants to rejuvenate that profitable title from 2003 and, perhaps, create more movies in a potential series.
It is a bit late in the game to do a sequel to a 2003 movie now, although Top Gun: Maverick succeeded a few years back for the same studio, Paramount. That was a much bigger property, though. It may be in the best interest of Paramount to simply reboot How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days rather than make a straightforward sequel, but the studio will ultimately call the shots and make their decision which route to take once a script has officially been written.
