TOP GUN 3: Paramount Confirms at CinemaCon That Script is in the Works for Upcoming Sequel

Top Gun 3 Script Moving Forward
Top Gun 3 is going to be moving ahead with its highly anticipated script currently in development over at Paramount.
In 2022, Top Gun: Maverick proved to be a box-office juggernaut. Coming 36 years after 1986’s smash, Top Gun, the sequel steamrolled the competition in theaters during the summer of ’22 and received several well-deserved Academy Award nominations. Now, at CinemaCon, the studio behind the film, Paramount, has revealed a script is currently in the works for the third Top Gun picture.
Jerry Bruckheimer will, once again, be producing while Tom Cruise will, as expected, reprise his lead role as Maverick from the earlier Top Gun movies. Ehren Kruger will be penning the script which has many people wondering which characters from the first two pictures will be returning to the action the third time around? Jennifer Connelly and Miles Teller are certainly possibilities to return, but who knows if their characters will be written into the third film’s script and whether or not they’re contracted to come back for another “go?”
Lady Gaga created a fine song for the second film called “Hold My Hand” which scored audience votes as one of the best songs featured in a 2022 movie. Top Gun: Maverick was the biggest financial hit of Tom Cruise’s long-standing film career. It even showcased the late, great Val Kilmer who is unlikely to make an appearance (even in flashbacks) in the third part due to Kilmer’s passing both on and off-screen.
Top Gun: Maverick earned a rare “A+” CinemaScore grade from opening night audiences back in 2022. It will take a solid script and great casting to recapture that glory the film achieved both at the Oscar nominations and at the box-office. It would be a great idea if Kelly McGillis of part 1 could make a return and possibly compete with Jennifer Connelly of part 2 for Cruise’s character’s affections in the third installment. McGillis, however, is retired and is no longer the sex symbol she once was in 1986 whereas Connelly and Cruise have maintained their sexy appearances in the public eye over the years. That means if the McGillis character were to come back, she may have to be recast.
Glen Powell could also return as Hangman for the new Top Gun movie as well, but his price tag has probably risen significantly since Powell became a leading man after the success of Top Gun: Maverick. Powell was most prominently seen in the recent remake of The Running Man.
Top Gun 3 is going to be a huge event film to look forward to. FilmBook will be following its progression from the page to the silver screen so keep your eyes peeled for more information on this project as it becomes available.
