8th Mission: Impossible Film Leaps Into 2025

The new release date for the 8th Mission: Impossible film will be right before Memorial Day weekend in 2025 due to the ongoing actors’ strike.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was one of the year’s best films but didn’t get all the box-office dollars it needed to make due to the double threat that was Barbenheimer. Because of the actors’ strike which has brought production on the follow-up Mission: Impossible film to a stand-still, Paramount has decided to move the 8th picture in the franchise from June 28, 2024 to Memorial Day weekend of 2025– May 23rd, to be precise. That positions the movie in a similar release spot which was held by Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Without Barbenheimer staring it down, expect the 8th Mission: Impossible to be more lucrative than its exciting predecessor. The 8th picture in the Tom Cruise crackerjack series will also have access to IMAX screens for three weeks this time out.

A Quiet Place: Day One is snatching up that coveted June 28, 2024 spot. That horror picture will be shifting from its original March 8, 2024 date to the new summer slot. That’s a good sign for Michael Sarnoski (Pig)’s sure-to-be successful movie. Paramount is also moving other dates around their schedule as well. The Ryan Reynolds-starrer, IF, is moving up to May 17th to get a head start on Memorial Day weekend 2024 by allowing word of mouth to build on the John Krasinski-directed dramedy. Elsewhere on Paramount’s schedule, a SpongeBob Squarepants movie that was originally positioned for May 23, 2025 is swimming to December 19, 2025.

The 8th Mission: Impossible film’s new date change will potentially help out Kevin Costner’s western, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter One at the box-office as old pros Costner and Cruise won’t have to duke it out for the top spot on June 28, 2024. Instead, Lupita Nyong’o, star of A Quiet Place: Day One, will be vying for the number one spot against Costner that last weekend in June 2024.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is still the best action movie of summer 2023 despite complaints that the box-office results did match the ones which were originally anticipated. It was also lengthy and had less screenings per day than Barbie did. Oppenheimer also sort of stole many of the 7th Mission: Impossible‘s IMAX screens which didn’t help matters much from a financial standpoint.

Paramount has until May 2025 now to make sure audiences choose to accept the mission to see the 8th (and presumably final) movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise. A lot will depend on a prompt resolution to the actors’ strike to get the new Mission: impossible back into production to make its new release date.
