THE NAKED GUN: Reboot of Old Leslie Nielsen Comedy Grabs a Summer 2025 Release Date

Leslie Nielsen The Naked Gun

Upcoming Naked Gun Reboot to be Released in July 2025

A remake film based on the Leslie Nielsen The Naked Gun comedy series from the 1980’s and 1990’s has received a release date of July 18, 2025 from Paramount.

Liam Neeson has been cast in Leslie Nielsen’s former leading role in the new The Naked Gun movie which acts as a sequel (or “requel”) to the third installment of the franchise from 1994, Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult. This new movie will launch at theaters in the middle of the summer in 2025 on July 18th. That positions the film in a competitive spot which many believe was selected because Paramount has confidence in the project.

Seth MacFarlane is co-producing the upcoming movie through his production company, Fuzzy Door. The original movies were made by comic geniuses, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker. In 1988, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! made $78 million at the domestic box-office. That was enough to warrant a sequel in 1991, The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear. That picture earned $86 million and performed well on par with the original at the box-office. Though 1994’s The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult made just $51 million, some time has passed since that movie and moviegoers may be antsy to see a comedy as funny as the original Leslie Nielsen pictures were.

Also on the horizon for Paramount is a third Paw Patrol movie and sequel to the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem film. The dates which have been selected for those releases are as follows: July 31, 2026 for Paw Patrol 3 and October 9, 2026 for the TMNT picture. These follow up movies come on the heels of box-office successes. Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, the second picture in that series, made a solid $65 million in ticket sales while the Mutant Mayhem movie earned $118 million domestically and $61 million internationally.

The Naked Gun reboot has been a long time in the making. Liam Neeson, an action movie star, may not seem like the best choice to slip into Nielen’s old goofy cop character role. However, that may add to the hilarity as Neeson could put an interesting spin on the part.

Seth MacFarlane’s involvement in the project has set high hopes for fans of both The Naked Gun films and MacFarlane, himself. While one of MacFarlane’s most successful movies was the $218 million grossing Ted from 2012, the sequel made just $81 million. But, for the record, Mac Farlane isn’t directing the new picture. Akiva Schaffer is.

Still, one The Naked Gun reboot could be a lot of fun but with its positioned release date, it seems clear Paramount is anticipating grosses that could inspire more sequels with Neeson at the center. The first The Naked Gun movie was clearly the best and earned an “A-” CinemaScore grade at the time of its release while the sequels earned just “B+’s.”
