Paramount Picks Up Sequel to Neon’s Terrifying 2024 Box-Office Hit LONGLEGS

Neon’s Hit Longlegs Inspires New Project at Paramount

Longlegs proved to be a hit at the box-office in the summer of 2024 and, now, Nicolas Cage, the film’s star, will be re-teaming with director Osgood Perkins for a follow-up movie.

Neon released one of its most profitable movies, Longlegs, in 2024. That horror chiller starred an unrecognizable Nicolas Cage as a demented psycho in a film that begged comparisons to The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal Lecter. Paramount will be taking on the next film in the Longlegs universe due to the fact that Neon seemingly doesn’t have the kind of budget to disperse that the new film requires.

Back on board the new Longlegs movie will be the same director, Osgood (Oz) Perkins, as well as Cage. Perkins made a couple of movies that were released after Longlegs, The Monkey and Keeper. However, neither film managed to come close to capturing the box-office take of the sensation that Longlegs was. Perkins just completed a Nicole Kidman starrer, The Young People, which looks likely to put Perkins back on the map as a filmmaker to be reckoned with.

Longlegs has vibes that make it feel quite similar to The Silence of the Lambs and the 2024 movie performed almost as well as that aforementioned 1991 classic at the box-office, well initially at least. Longlegs didn’t quite have the long legs the 1991 movie had, but it still made about $128 million worldwide. Longlegs‘ CinemaScore grade was no laughing matter, however, at a wobbly “C+,” but many chalked that mark up to the fact that horror films typically receive low CinemaScores. The Silence of the Lambs, in retrospect, scored an “A-.”

The big question mark here is if Paramount can get people to line up to see the next Longlegs picture even after seeing what Nic Cage looked like in the first film. Neon kept Cage’s appearance in that movie a secret the first time out in terms of revealing very little of what he looked like in his role in the trailers. Now that people know how ugly he looks, will they come back to see Cage acting creepy again or will they feel they already seen what Cage had to offer in this particular role?

In any event, expect Perkins and Cage’s Longlegs follow-up film to be handled with kid gloves by Paramount. They’re going to certainly try to make sure they can stir up the buzz for this picture that the first movie created. Paramount must have something special planned in the marketing strategy this time out because they’re upping the budget this time around and the plot of the upcoming film has been kept completely under wraps so far, suggesting that the studio has a strategy that will be interesting to see played out to market this new tale of terror.
