New York Film Critics Select ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, Rose Byrne & More for Top Awards

New York Film Critics Make Some Inspired Choices
Rose Byrne took the Best Actress award from the New York Film Critics which chose One Battle After Another as the year’s best movie.
It was no surprise One Battle After Another took another Best Picture honor after winning the Gotham award last night, but it was a delight to see Rose Byrne win Best Actress from the New York Film Critics for her powerful work in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, the little-seen A24 gem that played the film festival circuits this year. In another major awards season twist, Amy Madigan (Field of Dreams) won Best Supporting Actress from the NYFCC for her performance in the blockbuster horror film, Weapons.
On the men’s side, Wagner Moura took Best Actor honors from the NYFCC for his turn in The Secret Agent (which took Best International Film of the year accolades) and Benicio Del Toro won Best Supporting Actor for his hilarious turn in One Battle After Another. Year after year, the New York Film Critics’ distinguished choices usually tend to go on to earn nominations for Oscars from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Jafar Panahi earned the Best Director honor this year from the NYFCC for his work on the masterpiece, It Was Just an Accident. Panahi bested One Battle After Another director Paul Thomas Anderson who was the odds-on favorite to win the coveted directing award today. Sinners secured a Best Cinematography win from the New York Film Critics today as well, suggesting it’s an awards season contender for sure.
KPop Demon Hunters took Best Animated Feature honors while Marty Supreme won the Best Screenplay accolades. Marty Supreme had been pegged to win Best Picture and Best Director honors from the NYFCC but settled for screenplay honors instead.
Rose Byrne’s masterful work in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is one of the greatest cinematic performances of our time. She will, undoubtedly, win many other awards this season and A24 should start getting a re-release of the film planned in order to make more people aware of the indie movie. While Weapons is a great movie itself, Madigan may face an uphill battle to secure an Oscar nod for her work in the picture. It all depends on whether or not other critics groups choose to recognize her as well in her category.
One Battle After Another is in a tight race with Sinners to secure the Academy Award for Best Picture for the 2025 film releases. The National Board of Review, LA Film Critics and Golden Globe nods are the next indicators of what is to come, and it will be interesting to see which of these two major movies the other three groups choose to honor. Could Marty Supreme still pick up some major traction and win the Oscar for Best Picture? At this point, anything is possible!
