Golden Globes Nominate Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt for THE SMASHING MACHINE and (Mostly) Snub AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH

Golden Globes Offer Surprise Nominations
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt received Golden Globe nominations this morning for their work in The Smashing Machine which was amongst some other nice surprise nominations.
There were some big surprises this morning as actors and actresses who were thought to be forgotten emerged in this year’s Golden Globe nominees list. Jennifer Lawrence made an appearance in the Best Actress (Drama) category for her work in Die My Love while Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt got nods in their respective acting categories for The Smashing Machine. Avatar: Fire and Ash didn’t get a Best Picture or a Best Director (James Cameron) nomination from the Golden Globes suggesting the studio either screened it too late or voters just weren’t admiring it in the expected way.
Wicked: For Good was, surprisingly, snubbed for Best Picture in the Comedy or Musical category where films like One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme garnered expected nominations there. Meanwhile, Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite didn’t register even a single nomination today. Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On? also fared poorly at the Globes nomination announcement with its stars, Will Arnett and Laura Dern getting snubbed entirely. No Other Choice made a comeback, though, and found itself garnering some surprising nods (such as one for Best Picture, Comedy or Musical) this morning which means it could fare well with a potential Oscar nod for Best International Feature.
Some actresses fared better than others today. Elle Fanning got a nod for Best Supporting Actress for Sentimental Value, but Sydney Sweeney was snubbed for her lead dramatic performance in Christy. Nouvelle Vague, one of our favorites, made the cut for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical), but the performers in that film didn’t get nominated for anything.
Sinners looks like it will win Best Picture (Drama) against the likes of films like Hamnet and Frankenstein, but One Battle After Another is simply a shoo-in for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical). Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) got nominated in the same category as Leonardo DiCaprio and other heavy hitters like George Clooney (Jay Kelly). Bugonia appeared in the Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) category this morning, cementing its shot at potential Oscar nomination glory next year.
Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue) made the cut in the same lead acting category as likely winner Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You). Both Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro were nominated for Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another which could be a conflict of interest in terms of a winner coming from that film by directing nominee Paul Thomas Anderson.
Amy Madigan found herself in the Best Supporting Actress category for Weapons and It Was Just an Accident, again, made it into the Best Non-English Language Film, director (Jafar Panahi) and screenplay categories. F1: The Movie was nominated for Best Original Score and Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement where Avatar: Fire and Ash was also recognized even though it has yet to be released.
Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere) was one of the biggest shockers today as he appeared in the Best Actor (Drama) category this morning. In the Best Actress (Drama) category, Julia Roberts (After the Hunt), Tessa Thompson (Hedda) and Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby) were also surprise nominees.
