The Critics Choice Nominations Snub Dwayne Johnson, George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Glenn Close & More

Great Performances Snubbed by Critics Choice Nominations
This year’s Critics Choice nominations featured many of the usual suspects in this season’s award races but snubbed the likes of actors like Dwayne Johnson and George Clooney.
Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love) and Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine) as well as George Clooney (Jay Kelly) and Glenn Close (Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery) were among the major players snubbed by the Critics Choice Association in yet another competitive year in the world of cinema. So, don’t expect Lawrence, Johnson, Clooney or Close to be preparing acceptance speeches for this particular upcoming awards ceremony although Clooney and Close could still get Oscar nods depending on how the Golden Globe nominations turn out early next week.
Sinners topped the Critics Choice nominations with 17 nods which makes it the front runner for Best Picture at the Oscars. Right behind it is One Battle After Another which many insiders have pegged as the “one” to beat for the main Academy Award next year. While Clooney got snubbed by the CCA for Best Actor, his film’s co-star, Adam Sandler, made the cut for Best Supporting Actor. The other movies which were deemed the nominees for Best Picture were Hamnet, Jay Kelly, Marty Supreme, Frankenstein, Train Dreams, Bugonia, Sentimental Value and Wicked: For Good. Avatar: Fire and Ash didn’t get into the Best Picture race which is probably a fluke as it is most likely a shoo-in to be nominated for the coveted award at the Oscars.
Other huge snubs included Gwyneth Paltrow (Marty Supreme) and Laura Dern (Is This Thing On?) for their roles in high-profile upcoming holiday releases. Don’t rule them out just yet though. Their movies have yet to be released and could build traction as they come out just in time to gain Oscar voters’ attention.
Cynthia Erivo was snubbed for her lead role in Wicked: For Good even though her co-star, Ariana Grande, made the cut for Best Supporting Actress in the same movie. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson were completely snubbed for their roles in Song Sung Blue which dampens their Oscar nomination chances considerably.
What does this all mean? Nothing much, yet. We need to see the Golden Globe nominations next week to get a clearer picture of where everybody stands in the races for the Academy Awards. Don’t expect Dwayne Johnson or Jennifer Lawrence to be winning Oscars for their work this year, though, despite their early front-runner statuses back in the beginning of the fall. Do expect Sinners to gain a lot of traction over the next few weeks and, hopefully, it will take home the gold for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Rose Byrne got a CCA nom today and continues to be on-track to win Best Actress for her work in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
